An increase in the consumption of pineapples
and minor fruits
EUROFRESH
DISTRIBUTION
According to the annual TNS information, until April 2008, inclusively, the British tropical fruits market
has registered a consumption of 282. million units for a value of . million pounds, which
supposes a slight fall of -1 % in volume in relation to the previous year 200 /0 , and almost no changes
in terms of value (+0. %).
The leading position on the British
fruit market is held by 5 major references,
such as counter-season melon,
pineapple, mango, kiwi and avocado,
having in total more than 90 % of the
sales, of which around half fall on the
share of melon).
It is necessary to mention a significant
increase of the pineapple consumption
registered during the last year, while
other references registered decreases
both in volume and in value. Kiwi registered
a + 2.5 % increase in value, while
mango had a +2 % growth in volume.
Concretely, the pineapple consumption
went up by +14.6 % with 51.9 million
units sold, which equals to +11.4 %
or 50 million pounds in terms of value.
The consumption of melon with 126.7
million units sold for a value of 107.2
million pounds registered a fall of -5
%; the consumption of avocado got
down by -8 % in volume and by -5 % in
value; kiwi experienced -6 % and +2,5
%, respectively; and mango increased
by +2 % in quantity and went down by
-3 % in price.
In addition, it is necessary to emphasize
the recovery of other tropical
fruits, though still registering a low
consumption level, they are definitely
in the black. To illustrate this point:
the consumption of figs increased by
+42 % and by +52 % in volume and
value, respectively, physalis (+55 %
and +34.5 %), papayas (+10.5 % and
+7.5 %) and litchis (+9 % and +31 %). In
terms of the units sold, figs registered
651,000 units, papayas 2.1 million
of units, litchis 2 million of units and
physalis 296,000 units.
kets, which represents 79 % of the
market in terms of volume, and 85 %
in value. But it is necessary to mention
an important increase of the discount
points of purchase, which have increased
their market share by 43 % in
volume and 37 % in value, meanwhile
the supermarkets lost -4 %. These
numbers reflect the general tendency
that has started during the last years
and still continues, as the discount
points of sale constantly increase their
offer and the range of tropical fruits,
selling it cheaper than the supermarkets.
At the moment, discount points
of purchase control 10 % of the sale
volumes, which equals to 6 % in value,
while the fruit stands register 6 % in
terms of volume and 5 % in terms of
value. The traditional markets register
4 % of the sales, which is around 2 %
in value, and other type of distributional
channels register a quota of 2 %,
which equals to 3 % in turnover.
It is necessary to emphasize the increasing
sales of the independent fruit
stands, which registered 7 % in volume
and +9 % in value. There is a fall of the
consumers` interest to the traditional
markets, supposing 14 % less of sales
than during the previous year.
