EUROFRESH
DISTRIBUTION
(12,000) and Chérie (4,500) are the 3
stars of this segment, both in France
and abroad.
Local markets in the Middle East and
the Magreb are the other major market
areas for Germicopa, with Atlas
(10,000 t) and Pamela (new variety)
being growing successes, due to their
big sizes and high yield.
The processing industry has become
an important target for Germicopa over
the last 5 years, with Amyla becoming
the leading European variety for the
starch industry. The Brittany breeder
has also entered other processing segments
in the last 5 years with Daisy (For
French fries) and Sassy (for crisps).
HZPC, the global leader
The leading Dutch and world seed
potato enterprise keeps increasing its
seed potato volumes by a few points
every year. “We expect to do a bit more
again this season, due to our global
presence” declares the Managing
Director of HZPC. The group is established
in all the major international
markets, including South Africa, New
Zealand, China and India, either directly
or with monitored partners. Mondial
has become the largest HZPC variety
multiplied in South Africa, while Innovator
is growing strongly in Argentina.
Gérard Backx, Director of HZPC
Russia is supplied with both exported
seed and local multiplications.
HPZC has its own seed potato production,
mainly in The Netherlands and
France. From these countries, HZPC
exports to countries in Europe, North
Africa and the Middle East.
Horizon, friendly performance
The Higgins group, which markets
300,000 tons of potatoes, is mainly active
in supplying the processing industry,
as well as in breeding and selecting
new improved varieties. Horizon
is its promising new variety, showing
astonishing productivity for the second
year. German growers have seen
yields of 90 to 95 tons/ha with lower
water and fertilizer inputs. “We consider
Horizon very environmentally
friendly and a farmer’s favourite variety,
since a higher yield is obtained
with less water and fertilizer than with
other varieties” declares David Scott,
head of the seed potato department.
The variety has also performed well
in tests across Europe and in the demanding
environments of North Africa
and the Middle East.
Potato Masters, true innovations
The leading Belgian potato packer has
also become a licensee of Premium
segment varieties. 3 new varieties
were registered in 2007 and have been
multiplied as mini-tubers since 2008.
Miss Blush, Miss Mignonne and Miss
Andes were clearly distinguished during
the last Potato Europe exhibition in
France. Miss Blush is a very innovative
bicolour baby variety (30-50 mm), in
great demand for its true differentiation.
Miss Mignonne and Miss Andes
are both firm-fleshed baby varieties in
23-55mm sizes.
The Potato Masters group distributes
about 145,000 tons of potatoes,
mainly in Belgium, France and Spain. It
includes P.M. Belgium packing operations,
(60,000 tons), P.M. Rhône-Alpes
(35,000 t) and Distrifruits in Andalusia,
which handles 45,000 tons, both for
early export programs and for table
potato imports for the local market.
