WOMEN
A fundamental part of the success of Pistol events
Shooting Sport has changed throughout the years, and so have the
events within the Olympic program. In order to give women more
chances to compete, and to encourage the development of the sport by
the member federations, separate shooting events dedicated to women
were introduced at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Canada’s
lindA Thom became the first woman to win an Olympic shooting
Gold medal, as this was the first women’s event held in 1984. She and
American ruby Fox tied for first place with 585, but Thom won the
shoot-off 148-147. Since then, some great athletes have been writing
the history of pistol shooting shot after shot.
Three shooters in the course of the Games reached the top of the
rankings, obtaining five Olympic medals each. At the top of the chart
stands mArinA loGvinenko, shooting for URS, EUN and Russia,
who competed in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, earning
two Gold medals, one Silver and two Bronzes. And even if she seemed
invincible in those years, two younger shooters competed neck and
neck against her: Grozdeva and Sekaric. Bulgaria’s mAriA GrozdevA
finished on the podium in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004, winning two
Gold medals and three Bronzes in both the women’s pistol events. At
the same time, Serbia’s top athlete JAsnA sekAric won one Olympic
Gold, three Silver medals and one Bronze. And the Games are not over,
as London 2012 might be another exciting chapter written by women
in pistol events.
Among the most successful women pistol shooters we should
mention the most consistent athletes who participated in several different
Olympic editions. Two shooters who are still active, Georgia’s nino
sAlukvAdze and Serbia’s JAsnA sekAric, along with Greece’s
AGAThi kAssoumi, turned out to be the shooters with the highest
