he Global RFID Interoperability<br />

Forum <strong>for</strong> St<strong>and</strong>ards (GRIFS) is a<br />

Support Action Project funded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> European Commission’s FP7 Programme<br />

with <strong>the</strong> aim to improve collaboration<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reby to maximise<br />

<strong>the</strong> global interoperability <strong>of</strong> RFID<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards. This two year project<br />

started in January 2008 <strong>and</strong> is run by<br />

GS1 (project coordinator), CEN <strong>and</strong><br />

ETSI.<br />

Project objectives<br />

A world <strong>of</strong> global supply chains requires that<br />

RFID tags <strong>and</strong> associated sensors can operate,<br />

can be seen <strong>and</strong> can be interrogated anywhere.<br />

For maximum competitiveness <strong>and</strong><br />

greatest efficiency this requires st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

that are global in definition <strong>and</strong> in application.<br />

The GRIFS project aims at initiating a <strong>for</strong>um<br />

that will continue to work constructively <strong>and</strong><br />

grow after <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project through a<br />

Memor<strong>and</strong>um <strong>of</strong> Underst<strong>and</strong>ing between key<br />

global st<strong>and</strong>ard organisations active in RFID.<br />

This Forum should improve <strong>the</strong> collaboration<br />

between st<strong>and</strong>ards organisations <strong>and</strong> increase<br />

interoperability <strong>of</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

Project activities<br />

GRIFS is undertaking <strong>the</strong> following work to<br />

achieve its objective:<br />

Analyse <strong>the</strong> national, regional <strong>and</strong> global<br />

RFID st<strong>and</strong>ardisation activities. The team<br />

has built up an online database listing<br />

more than 160 RFID st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

Several workshops <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r actions have<br />

been organised at regional level to raise<br />

awareness <strong>and</strong> to identify areas where<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard development coordination might<br />

be required. Those workshops have helped<br />

to prepare <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GRIFS <strong>for</strong>um.<br />

A GRIFS <strong>for</strong>um has been launched <strong>and</strong><br />

four <strong>for</strong>um meetings are being organised in<br />

<strong>the</strong> regions <strong>of</strong> Asia, America <strong>and</strong> Europe.<br />

The final <strong>for</strong>um meeting in Europe will aim<br />

to cement <strong>the</strong> Memor<strong>and</strong>um <strong>of</strong> Under-<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> ensure that <strong>the</strong> GRIFS <strong>for</strong>um<br />

will be viable <strong>and</strong> will be able to continue<br />

to operate beyond <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> this support<br />

action.<br />

This support action is focusing on <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

RFID in supply chain <strong>and</strong> related activities.<br />

These activities primarily encompass <strong>the</strong><br />

tracking <strong>and</strong> tracing <strong>of</strong> physical items as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

move through supply chains in many different<br />

businesses, both in <strong>the</strong> public <strong>and</strong> private<br />

sector.<br />

The <strong>for</strong>um will continue to enable exchanges<br />

<strong>of</strong> views on all aspects <strong>of</strong> RFID interoperability<br />

from <strong>the</strong> perspective <strong>of</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardisation,<br />

thus facilitating a coherent <strong>and</strong> consistent<br />

global RFID st<strong>and</strong>ardisation policy.<br />
