universally suitable <strong>for</strong> any kind <strong>of</strong> items. This poses difficulties <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se technologies in a business environment. Extensive testing <strong>and</strong> evaluations are usually<br />

required be<strong>for</strong>e a technology is chosen.<br />

The SToP project has demonstrated how IT-based systems, <strong>Internet</strong> connectivity, <strong>and</strong> automatic<br />

identification can be used in business settings to establish a system <strong>for</strong> product au<strong>the</strong>ntication.<br />

Seamless integration in business processes can be achieved, thus making it possible<br />

to secure supply chains <strong>and</strong> minimize <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> counterfeits. Ultimately, this should<br />

lead to a high detection rate <strong>of</strong> counterfeit articles <strong>and</strong> thus reduce illicit actors’ financial incentives<br />

to engage in <strong>the</strong> counterfeit business altoge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
