he Indisputable Key project is<br />

developing new methods <strong>and</strong> ICT<br />

solutions to improve <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

wood <strong>and</strong> optimise <strong>for</strong>est production<br />

by utilising traceability <strong>of</strong> logs <strong>and</strong><br />

boards through <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>est-wood supply<br />

chain.<br />

The Indisputable Key<br />

Project<br />

Large volumes <strong>of</strong> wood are going to waste.<br />

Knowledge <strong>of</strong> log characteristics <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

impact on <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>and</strong> final end-use <strong>of</strong><br />

wood products can help in <strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

most suitable log <strong>for</strong> a specific product while<br />

still in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>est <strong>and</strong> thus significantly reduce<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> wood wasted. New methods<br />

<strong>and</strong> technology <strong>for</strong> traceability are needed to<br />

make it possible to mark individual logs <strong>and</strong><br />

boards, <strong>and</strong> to trace <strong>the</strong>se through <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>estwood<br />

supply chain.<br />

Project Results<br />

The project covers different areas such as<br />

data exchange, models <strong>and</strong> indicators <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

<strong>and</strong> environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance, RFID<br />

technology <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r technologies <strong>for</strong> marking<br />

<strong>and</strong> reading, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware modules <strong>for</strong><br />

integration. The industrial implementation is<br />

supported by exploitation planning, industrial<br />

demonstrations <strong>and</strong> training.<br />

Major achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project include<br />

new RFID technology <strong>for</strong> log marking; inkbased<br />

board marking <strong>and</strong> reading; an infrastructure<br />

<strong>for</strong> data exchange based upon existing<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards such as papiNet, Stan<strong>for</strong>d <strong>and</strong><br />

EPCglobal; s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>for</strong> tracing objects <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong> monitoring economic <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />

key per<strong>for</strong>mance indicators; models <strong>for</strong> predicting<br />

wood properties <strong>and</strong> models <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

simulation <strong>of</strong> supply chain scenarios.<br />

Indisputable Key<br />

Intelligent Distributed Process Utilization <strong>and</strong><br />

Blazing Environmental Key<br />

Main novel developments include:<br />

Pulping compatible passive EPC C1G2<br />

compatible UHF RFID transponders <strong>for</strong><br />

marking logs.<br />

Robust RFID reader with an adaptive RF<br />

front end <strong>for</strong> use in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>est in <strong>the</strong> harvesters.<br />

Special Key Per<strong>for</strong>mance Indicators <strong>for</strong><br />

easy access to <strong>the</strong> environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

<strong>of</strong> a product.<br />

S<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>for</strong> monitoring environmental<br />

<strong>and</strong> economical per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>of</strong> a product<br />

on item level.<br />

The expected benefits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project include<br />

better yield; reduced emissions; better tools<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> tracing <strong>of</strong> timber origin <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> prevention<br />

<strong>of</strong> illegal logging <strong>and</strong> better tools <strong>for</strong><br />

product <strong>and</strong> process development. The functionality<br />

<strong>and</strong> benefits will be demonstrated at<br />

locations in France <strong>and</strong> Sweden. The main<br />

demonstration is in Sweden <strong>and</strong> will involve<br />

Sveaskog, Setra Group (Malå) <strong>and</strong> Norsjö Trä<br />

(component manufacturing).<br />
