None in <strong>the</strong> conventional sense <strong>of</strong> items<br />

submitted specifically as ‘coursework’,<br />

although <strong>the</strong> Preliminary Mark reflects <strong>the</strong><br />

standard <strong>of</strong> work produced throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

course.<br />

No dictionaries allowed in any external<br />

assessment or in preparation time for<br />

speaking tests.<br />

Listening tests by means <strong>of</strong> personal<br />

stereos with rewind facility or language<br />

laboratory.<br />

The usual sequence and timing <strong>of</strong> taking<br />

<strong>the</strong> above units is <strong>the</strong> first three in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course (leading to an AS level)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> remaining three in <strong>the</strong> second<br />

year, but alternative sequences are<br />

acceptable.<br />

Units may be re-taken.<br />

Broad topic areas are published (all<br />

relating to <strong>the</strong> target-language country),<br />

indicating <strong>the</strong> areas from which reading<br />

and listening material will be drawn.<br />

A list is published <strong>of</strong> grammatical<br />

structures which candidates may be<br />

expected to recognise or use.<br />

Grade Boundary UMS marks are published<br />

for all units.<br />

Grade descriptors are published for each<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elements (speaking, reading and<br />

listening, writing, cultural component) at<br />

Grades A, C and E.<br />

Broad Assessment Objectives are<br />

published, relating to candidates’ ability to:<br />

understand and respond, in<br />

speech and writing, to both spoken<br />

and written French;<br />

demonstrate knowledge<br />

prescribed grammar and syntax<br />

and apply it accurately;<br />

demonstrate knowledge and<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

French society.<br />

Assessment Criteria are published in<br />

<strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> grids for <strong>the</strong> various<br />

components, describing <strong>the</strong> levels to be<br />

attained for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> each mark. In<br />

some tests, detailed and specific pointby-point<br />

mark-schemes are used<br />

instead.<br />
