Criteria for success<br />

A final mark <strong>of</strong> 60% or more will indicate a pass<br />

Students scoring at least 57% and less than 60 % will have <strong>the</strong>ir results reviewed and if <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

achieved 6/10 in three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five written exams may be awarded a pass.<br />

Students scoring 59 to 59.99% must have obtained a satisfactory result in two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five exams to be<br />

awarded a pass.<br />

Written papers<br />

Students are assessed on <strong>the</strong> two year course, as opposed to <strong>the</strong> EB which focuses predominantly on <strong>the</strong><br />

year 7 course, although this does build on <strong>the</strong> year 6 course in most areas.<br />

Paper 1<br />

No calculator allowed. 2 hours allocated to <strong>the</strong> exam and 30 % <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marks awarded. An information<br />

booklet is provided<br />

Section A - compulsory short-response questions based on compulsory core syllabus<br />

Section B - compulsory extended–response questions based on core syllabus<br />

Paper 2<br />

Calculator required. 2 hours allocated to <strong>the</strong> exam and 30% <strong>of</strong> marks awarded<br />

Section B – compulsory extended –response questions based on <strong>the</strong> compulsory core syllabus<br />

Paper 3<br />

Calculator required, 1 hour allocated and 20 % <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marks awarded.<br />

Internal Assessment<br />

This accounts for <strong>the</strong> final 20% and is a collection <strong>of</strong> two pieces <strong>of</strong> work assigned by <strong>the</strong> teacher and<br />

completed by <strong>the</strong> students during <strong>the</strong> course. They do not have to be completed during <strong>the</strong> class work.<br />

These may be completed in year 12 and /or year 13. They must be based on different areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

syllabus and represent two types <strong>of</strong> task<br />

• Ma<strong>the</strong>matical investigation<br />

• Ma<strong>the</strong>matical modelling<br />

Marking Procedures<br />

Written papers are externally marked. Marks may be awarded for method, accuracy answers and<br />

reasoning, including interpretation. Presentation is not mentioned, unlike <strong>the</strong> EB.<br />

The internal assessments are marked by <strong>the</strong> class teacher and <strong>the</strong>n externally moderated by <strong>the</strong> IBO. The<br />

criteria are related to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics objectives. The written work assessed must be original work, done<br />

independently. It is an ongoing process and discussion is allowed with <strong>the</strong> teacher to develop <strong>the</strong> piece <strong>of</strong><br />

work. 10 hours <strong>of</strong> class time is allocated to <strong>the</strong> tasks being worked on as well as time spent independently<br />
