Elective Unit 5 - Patterns and processes in <strong>the</strong> Human Environment<br />

• To show a detailed understanding and be able to illustrate how<br />

population characteristics change over time and space and impact<br />

on human development.<br />

• To assess and evaluate <strong>the</strong> varying impact <strong>of</strong> population<br />

movements.<br />

• To examine in detail patterns <strong>of</strong> rural and urban settlement.<br />

• To identify and analyse <strong>the</strong> differing scale <strong>of</strong> problems associated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> urban centres.<br />

• To use <strong>the</strong> skills listed to examine <strong>the</strong> dynamic nature <strong>of</strong><br />

population and <strong>the</strong> pattern and distribution <strong>of</strong> settlement.<br />

Optional Unit 6 - Global Interdependence.<br />

Optional Unit 7 - Geoecology.<br />

• To evaluate <strong>the</strong> differing views <strong>of</strong> development and<br />

underdevelopment.<br />

• To show a detailed understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interdependent nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Global economy.<br />

• To assess <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> current economic patterns on developing<br />

economies or regions.<br />

• To discuss human development as a focus for change.<br />

• To examine <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> sustainable development as a model for <strong>the</strong><br />

future.<br />

• To use <strong>the</strong> skills listed to examine <strong>the</strong> interdependent nature <strong>of</strong> global<br />

economic, social and political processes to challenge <strong>the</strong> differing<br />

views <strong>of</strong> development.<br />

Optional unit 8 - Culture and identity<br />

Local, national and international settings to be used.<br />

• To explain and illustrate <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> soils.<br />

• To describe <strong>the</strong> combination <strong>of</strong> processes affecting soil<br />

characteristics.<br />

• To assess <strong>the</strong> inter relationship between soils and climates<br />

resulting in Biomes or global regions where plants and animals<br />

have adapted to specific environmental conditions.<br />

• To examine and evaluate <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> human activities on<br />

biomes. To use <strong>the</strong> skills listed to examine <strong>the</strong> inter relationships,<br />

on a global scale, between soils, climates, plants and animals.<br />
