Essay.<br />

The Advanced Language II<br />

(appr<strong>of</strong>ondissement) paper is based on<br />

a literary passage giving rise to:<br />

Five questions <strong>of</strong> an analytical<br />

nature on <strong>the</strong> text – 5 x 10 = 50<br />

marks<br />

A literary essay based on <strong>the</strong> set<br />

texts studied and on personal<br />

reading (choice <strong>of</strong> two subjects <strong>of</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> candidate chooses only<br />

one) - 50 marks<br />

The ‘corrigé’ provides markers with<br />

outlines <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elements to be expected<br />

and rewarded in <strong>the</strong> question on <strong>the</strong> text,<br />

but no indication <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong> marks are to<br />

be awarded.<br />

A very general indication <strong>of</strong> elements to<br />

be expected and rewarded in <strong>the</strong> Essay is<br />

also provided. 15 marks are available for<br />

giving precise examples from text studied<br />

or personal reading, 10 marks for putting<br />

forward a reasoned argument based on<br />

<strong>the</strong> subject, 20 marks for constructing a<br />

well developed, structured essay, and 5<br />

marks for expression (language, spelling<br />

etc.).<br />

There is no separate Listening<br />

Comprehension test.<br />

should not be seen as marks or<br />

percentages, and that it is inappropriate<br />

to think in terms <strong>of</strong> a pass/fail boundary<br />

when applying descriptors. Nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

candidates being assessed will follow any<br />

particular distribution pattern.<br />

Two written papers <strong>of</strong> 90 mins:<br />

Paper 1: Text handling: 40%<br />

Reading (questions based on written<br />

non-literary texts <strong>of</strong> different lengths and<br />

levels <strong>of</strong> difficulty): 27%<br />

All texts and questions in target<br />

language.<br />

All answers in target language.<br />

All texts have different communicative<br />

purposes.<br />

At least one text is literary in nature.<br />

No dictionaries.<br />

Variety <strong>of</strong> reading skills assessed.<br />

Various types <strong>of</strong> exercises involved – e.g.<br />

multiple choice, true or false, gap-filling,<br />

matching summary sentences with<br />

different sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text, identifying<br />

related ideas from different parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

text, matching words or phrases from <strong>the</strong><br />

text with definitions etc.<br />

Written response (short writing exercise<br />

in response to written texts): 13%<br />

Candidates attempt one task only.<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 100 words required.<br />

Candidates required to manipulate<br />

language and information given in source<br />

text and integrate <strong>the</strong>m in a response<br />

intended for a specific audience.<br />

Direct copying from <strong>the</strong> text not rewarded<br />

– candidates need to adapt <strong>the</strong> original<br />

text and integrate it appropriately in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

response.<br />

Candidates need to use language<br />

appropriate to <strong>the</strong> specific type <strong>of</strong> text.<br />

Typical exercises: letter <strong>of</strong> application;<br />

report/diary <strong>of</strong> events, producing a<br />

guide/brochure etc. Types <strong>of</strong> texts and<br />

exercises not replicated in Paper 2.<br />

Paper 2: Written Production: 30%<br />

All answers in target language.<br />

No dictionaries.<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 400 words required (250<br />

words at Standard Level) – no upper<br />

word limit, but quality more important
