In this test, candidates must answer 24 questions or sub questions. On average, <strong>the</strong>y have 12 minutes for<br />

each question. There is a serious question <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r this test actually permits <strong>the</strong> checking <strong>of</strong> main<br />

objectives: for example, to take initiative.<br />

This question paper is oriented towards ‘sounding out <strong>of</strong> knowledge’.<br />

2.2. At EB<br />

In year seven, <strong>the</strong> EB consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A-mark based on oral participation and written work, and <strong>the</strong> B-mark<br />

established by <strong>the</strong> written examination in January.<br />

The written examination (4h) consists <strong>of</strong>:<br />

Four compulsory “short” questions (50 points in total) <strong>of</strong> which two questions in analysis, one on geometry<br />

and one on probability.<br />

Two optional “long” questions (50 points in total) to be chosen from three questions: <strong>the</strong> first in analysis,<br />

<strong>the</strong> second on geometry and <strong>the</strong> third on probability.<br />

Content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> written examination is summarized in <strong>the</strong> syllabus specifications and is slightly different<br />

from <strong>the</strong> syllabus.<br />

2008-session<br />

Short questions: <strong>the</strong>se exercises allow <strong>the</strong> corrector to check basic knowledge<br />

Exercise 2 – integration<br />

Two questions; number two with two sub questions<br />

14 questions or sub questions in 120 minutes: average, less than 10 minutes for each question.<br />

Long questions<br />

Problem n°1 – analysis<br />

Three questions : n° 1 with three sub questions ; n°2 with two and n° 3 with two.<br />

Problem n°2 – Probability<br />

Three questions : n°1 with three sub questions ; n°3, four subquestions<br />

No high level <strong>of</strong> difficulty.<br />

Problem n°3 – Geometry<br />

Five questions : n°2 with two subquestions ; n°3 with two subquestions ; n°4 with two subquestions.<br />

No high level <strong>of</strong> difficulty<br />

In comparison with <strong>the</strong> syllabus, <strong>the</strong> exercises and problems <strong>of</strong> this question paper seem relatively easy<br />

and without strong linkage general objectives.<br />

2.3. Comparison<br />

The two question papers are built similarly: four exercises in French Bac and six in EB. These are not<br />

based on real problems, but ra<strong>the</strong>r a succession <strong>of</strong> elementary questions.<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r one nor <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r focus on evaluation <strong>of</strong> general skills; it is possible to observe a substantial<br />

difference between <strong>the</strong> objectives contained in <strong>the</strong> syllabus and <strong>the</strong> constructs which are <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

assessment.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> EB, <strong>the</strong> syllabus is completely covered via <strong>the</strong> four compulsory exercises. In <strong>the</strong> French Bac, this is<br />

true in 2008 session, but it is not an obligation.<br />

The required level is similar.<br />

The time allowed to find solutions and to complete <strong>the</strong> item is similar.<br />

In conclusion, from two different syllabus, <strong>the</strong> respective question papers are very similar.<br />
