What issue or need is addressed by the effective practice?<br />

The academic advisor training program at Black Hawk College faced challenges in training staff advisors that<br />

included accountability issues, conflicting schedules <strong>of</strong> trainers and trainees, the need for increased consistency<br />

in training, and difficulty in maintaining interest during lengthy training meetings.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> the effective practice:<br />

To address these challenges, the academic advisor training program at Black Hawk College has been<br />

transformed from a predominantly face-to-face delivery format to a balance <strong>of</strong> interactive technology, short<br />

face-to-face training seminars, required observations <strong>of</strong> experienced advisors, and observations by these same<br />

advisors <strong>of</strong> the trainees in the final phase <strong>of</strong> training. Trainees now access the didactic portion <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

content through WebCT and interact with trainers and other trainees through a discussion board. Quizzes<br />

incorporated into each unit give immediate feedback.<br />

How does this practice achieve sustainability?<br />

A standard curriculum is presented to each trainee. Stated learning objectives and course content are reviewed<br />

on a rolling basis. Standardized forms are used for observations by and <strong>of</strong> trainees.<br />

What are the results/measurable outcomes?<br />

Consistent course content for training advisors is readily available. Preparation time has remained constant<br />

since the course is regularly updated and monitoring an online course requires times. However, the time needed<br />

to deliver the didactic portion <strong>of</strong> training has been reduced by 65%, allowing greater ease in scheduling and<br />

completing training. Within the past 15 months, the Web Enhanced Advisor Training program has been utilized<br />

to train two groups <strong>of</strong> trainees including seven participants. Of the seven, six experienced a high level <strong>of</strong><br />

success. One trainee was unable to complete the program. An objective standard <strong>of</strong> trainee competence is<br />

determined through demonstration <strong>of</strong> stated learning objectives, successful completion <strong>of</strong> online quizzes, and<br />

observations <strong>of</strong> trainees on-the-job at the end <strong>of</strong> training.<br />
