Overview<br />
The Compendium <strong>of</strong> Institutional <strong>Effective</strong> <strong>Practice</strong>s presents 200 innovative practices submitted by Illinois<br />
higher education institutions and agencies as examples <strong>of</strong> methods utilized in achieving the six statewide<br />
priorities articulated in The Illinois Commitment. The compendium is composed <strong>of</strong> six sections representing the<br />
six statewide priorities <strong>of</strong> The Illinois Commitment. <strong>Effective</strong> practices are presented alphabetically by title<br />
within each <strong>of</strong> these sections.<br />
Illinois higher education institutions share examples <strong>of</strong> at least two effective practices as part <strong>of</strong> the annual<br />
Institutional Performance Report. Institutions submit the effective practices via an on-line system utilizing a<br />
standard template. “<strong>Effective</strong> practices” are defined as institutional activities that have a direct connection to The<br />
Illinois Commitment with measurable outcomes, sustainability, and potential applicability to other colleges and<br />
universities. As such, this compendium creates a central source <strong>of</strong> innovative strategies that can be used by all<br />
higher education institutions throughout Illinois, and also to build partnerships among Illinois colleges and<br />
universities in addressing areas <strong>of</strong> common interest. In addition to this bound volume, effective practices are<br />
available in a searchable on-line database at www.ibhe.org. This database is updated annually and provides a<br />
comprehensive resource for the Illinois higher education community.<br />
The Compendium <strong>of</strong> Institutional <strong>Effective</strong> <strong>Practice</strong>s represents the first <strong>of</strong> two statewide reports that utilize the<br />
information provided by the higher education community in the annual Institutional Performance Report. The<br />
second report, Assessing Progress <strong>of</strong> The Illinois Commitment, will highlight the performance <strong>of</strong> the Illinois<br />
higher education community by setting the context, discussing statewide indicators and overall performance,<br />
and presenting data for both common and mission-specific indicators for each institution that submitted a report.<br />
The second volume will be presented to the Board at its December meeting.<br />
