PVDF, PTFE (DIN designation)
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) belong to the group of highly chemically resistant
fluorothermoplastics. Due to its high molecular
weight, highly chemically resistant PTFE cannot be processed
by melting, but only by pressing and sintering to
create semi-finished products. PVDF can be formed by extrusion.
Properties: PVDF
ˌˌHigh density
ˌˌStrong and tough
ˌˌMinimal toughness at low temperatures
ˌˌHigh chemical resistance
ˌˌHydrolysis-resistant
ˌˌVery low moisture absorption
ˌˌHigh thermal expansion
ˌˌHigh dissipation factor, polar,
not suitable for high-frequency applications
ˌˌHigh resistance to UV radiation
ˌˌPVDF is significantly more resistant to energetic
radiation than all other fluorothermoplastics
ˌˌInherently flame resistant, self-extinguishing
ˌˌReleases highly toxic gas in case of fire
Properties: PTFE
ˌˌVery high crystallinity
ˌˌHighest density of all polymers
ˌˌVery tough down to low temperatures
ˌˌMinimal strength and hardness
ˌˌPoor creep strength
ˌˌExtremely high resistance to chemicals,
also to oxidizing acids
ˌˌHydrolysis-resistant
ˌˌNo stress crack formation
ˌˌVery low moisture absorption
ˌˌHigh thermal stability, but low
dimensional stability at temperature
ˌˌAnti-adhesive properties, very good
sliding properties, no stick-slip behaviour
ˌˌHigh resistance to UV radiation
ˌˌVery sensitive to severe radiation (gamma and X-rays)
ˌˌNot bondable with conventional materials
ˌˌHigh thermal expansion
ˌˌMinimal dissipation factor
ˌˌVery good electrical insulation properties
due to their low microstructure density, RAM extruded
products offer characteristics such as minimal dielectric
strength under high voltage)
ˌˌInherently flame resistant, self-extinguishing
ˌˌCombustion gases are fluoric, highly toxic
