Lipodystrophy and antioxidants in school-aged children infected with human immunodeficiency
virus

Background: To identify association between clinical-metabolic repercussions of the
lipodystrophy with micronutrient nutritional status and the enzyme superoxide dismutase in HIVinfected
children.
Methods: Prospective and transversal study was assessed in 51 HIV-infected children attended
at the Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic - Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo city,
Brazil. The clinical, nutritional and biochemical variables were related to the presence or absence
of clinical lipodystrophy.
Results: Lipodystrophy was present in 25.5% of the children. This group was identified for
subjects of younger age at the moment of diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy (ART) was more
