Lipodystrophy and antioxidants in school-aged children infected with human immunodeficiency<br />

Background: To identify association between clinical-metabolic repercussions of the<br />

lipodystrophy with micronutrient nutritional status and the enzyme superoxide dismutase in HIVinfected<br />

children.<br />

Methods: Prospective and transversal study was assessed in 51 HIV-infected children attended<br />

at the Pediatric <strong>Infectious</strong> Disease Clinic - Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo city,<br />

Brazil. The clinical, nutritional and biochemical variables were related to the presence or absence<br />

of clinical lipodystrophy.<br />

Results: Lipodystrophy was present in 25.5% of the children. This group was identified <strong>for</strong><br />

subjects of younger age at the moment of diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy (ART) was more<br />

damaging concerning current clinical and immune status (P
