Physical Education<br />
Description: The athletic trainer is a health care provider who specializes in the<br />
prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.<br />
The athletic trainer is most directly responsible for all phases of health care in an<br />
athletic environment.<br />
Employment Opportunities: Following completion of a Bachelor’s degree at an<br />
accredited institution, athletic training career opportunities range from fair to excellent<br />
with occupational titles that include Athletic Trainer, Teacher/Athletic Trainer, Physical<br />
Therapist/Athletic Trainer, and Physician's Assistant/Athletic Trainer.<br />
The Associate of Science degree with emphasis in athletic training will prepare<br />
students for transfer to accredited bachelor degree athletic training programs at<br />
colleges and universities. The curriculum is based on the current athletic training<br />
education competencies published by NATA education council. <strong>Southwestern</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> currently has 2+2 articulation agreements in athletic training with<br />
Washington State University (WSU), Eastern Washington University (EWU). This<br />
program also meets the requirements for the Associate of Arts <strong>Oregon</strong> Transfer<br />
Degree and the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE). An emphasis is placed on<br />
hands-on experience, gained through practicum with sports teams and medical<br />
professional settings.<br />

Notes:<br />
1. Select Social Science courses from the following: ANTH101, 102, 103, 221, 222,<br />
223, 230, 231, 232; CJ100, 101, 201, 220, 243; ECON201, 202; HDFS225, 229,<br />
247; HS265, 266, 267; HST101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203; PS201, 202, 205;<br />
SOC204, 205, 206. For students transferring to Washington State University,<br />
SOC204, 205, 206 is recommended.<br />
2. See Arts and Letters Emphasis Area Requirement list on page 61. Courses must<br />
be from outside the student’s area of concentration and not include courses with<br />
prefix ENG. For students transferring to Eastern Washington University or<br />
Washington State University, ENG104, 105, 106 is recommended.<br />
3. One course (3 credits) from Arts and Letters or Social Science must also fulfill the<br />
Cultural Diversity requirement listed on page 29. The credits for such course will<br />
only be counted once toward the credits required to complete the degree.<br />
• This program fulfills all the undergraduate Athletic Training prerequisites for and<br />
has 2+2 articulation agreements with Washington State University and Eastern<br />
Washington University. Articulation agreements are pending with Boise State<br />
University and Linfield <strong>College</strong>.<br />
• This degree for transfer students works as designed if the student completes the<br />
AS Athletic Training Emphasis and the Associate of Arts <strong>Oregon</strong> Transfer (AA/OT)<br />
degrees and graduates. The AS Athletic Training Emphasis degree at<br />
<strong>Southwestern</strong> also meets all requirements for the AA/OT, so no additional courses<br />
outside of the AS Athletic Training Emphasis need to be taken in order for a<br />
student to meet both degree requirements. Both degrees are required to ensure<br />
the seamless transition of students to the four-year graduating institutions for<br />
athletic training. When applying for graduation at <strong>Southwestern</strong>, two separate<br />
applications must be submitted - one for the AS Athletic Training Emphasis and<br />
one for the Associate of Art <strong>Oregon</strong> Transfer (AA/OT).<br />
• This program also meets the requirements for the Western Undergraduate<br />
Exchange (WUE).<br />
