Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />
The Associate of Applied Science in Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />
prepares students to work in a variety of educational and child care settings, including<br />
preschool, day care, private kindergarten and as a para-professional in the public<br />
schools. This degree offers students the opportunity to gain enhanced practical<br />
experience through practicum and student teaching courses.<br />
The Childhood Education and Family Studies Certificate of Completion is a<br />
one-year certificate that prepares students for entry level positions as child care<br />
workers, preschool attendants, preschool teacher aides, and day care assistants. This<br />
certificate fulfills the requirements for the first year of the AAS in Childhood Education<br />
and Family Studies degree.<br />

Notes:<br />
1. HE250 or PE231 may be substituted for three credits of PE185.<br />
2. ECE209, ECE102, ECE163, ECE261, and ECE262 must be taken in sequence.<br />
A criminal history check is required prior to enrollment in ECE209.<br />
3. See Distribution requirement lists on page 63. Courses must be from outside the<br />
student’s area of concentration and not include courses with prefixes ECE, ED,<br />
and HDFS.<br />
4. Prerequisite of WR121.<br />
5. May substitute appropriate elective; consult with program coordinator.<br />
6. Developmental and remedial courses, listed on page 62, and CS101 will not fulfill<br />
elective requirement.<br />
• All students are required to obtain a valid first aid and CPR card.<br />
The Childhood Education and Family Studies Certificates of Completion (30<br />
and 15 credits) are intended to provide students with the skills needed to begin a<br />
career in Childhood Education and Family Studies. These certificates can also assist<br />
the student in earning a Child Development Associate Certificate (CDA). Students<br />
enroll in these programs for a variety of reasons including upgrading skills and<br />
knowledge, obtaining a degree or retraining for a new profession. The credits earned<br />
can be laddered into a Childhood Education and Family Studies Certificate of<br />
Completion, an Associate of Applied Science Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />
or Associate of Science with an emphasis in Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />
which will transfer to a university.<br />

All Early Childhood Education students are required to obtain a valid first aid and<br />
CPR card, a Food Handlers Card and enroll in HDFS9284 Child Abuse and Neglect<br />
