Course Descriptions<br />
WR90 Paragraph Fundamentals<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
Paragraph Fundamentals is designed to help students<br />
write clear, correct paragraphs in standard English.<br />
A final goal is to have students organize paragraphs<br />
in an extended essay. The class will include discussion<br />
of grammar, punctuation, and conventions of style<br />
and usage.<br />
Prerequisite: WR0525 with a “C” or better or placement<br />
test score.<br />
WR110 Writing From Observation<br />
1 credit (20 lec hrs/total)<br />
Students will apply techniques of inquiry and analysis<br />
from various academic disciplines in order to understand<br />
and resolve key issues at selected field sites.<br />
Introductory lecture/lab will survey key issues and<br />
introduce techniques required for a site-based field study.<br />
Initial visits will be organized by a lead instructor or a<br />
team of instructors. With pre-approval and consultation of<br />
a writing instructor, this course may provide writing<br />
assignments for the Freshman Composition sequence.<br />
This course may also serve as preparation for a<br />
second-year capstone project.<br />
WR121 English Composition<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course presents the fundamentals and<br />
development of expository prose through frequent writing<br />
exercises. It is designed to help students learn the use of<br />
unity, clarity, coherence, and detail in the development of<br />
written ideas.<br />
Prerequisite: WR90 with a “C” or better or placement<br />
test score.<br />
WR122 English Composition<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course continues the preparation of the<br />
fundamentals of expository prose, with special emphasis<br />
on rhetorical principles of argumentation. Special<br />
attention is given to audience and style. The basic<br />
principles and use of logic in argumentative/persuasive<br />
writing are introduced.<br />
Prerequisite: WR121 with a “C” or better.<br />
WR123 English Composition<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course is designed to teach the research process<br />
and the conventions of writing and documenting a<br />
research paper and the discourse conventions, audience<br />
expectations, and bibliographic formats of selected<br />
disciplines. Emphasis is on developing a method for<br />
planning, researching, and writing papers based on<br />
collected information. The research paper develops an<br />
argumentative or analytical thesis; it necessitates critical<br />
reading and persuasive writing.<br />
Prerequisite: WR122 with a “C” or better.<br />
WR214 Business English<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
For Business and Office Occupations majors, WR214<br />
consists of the study of and practice in modern business<br />
communication, especially written communication.<br />
Emphasis is on persuasive and routine correspondence,<br />
rhetorical strategies, and appropriate conventions.<br />
The class will shape students' language skills, focusing<br />
on conciseness, correctness, and consistent and<br />
appropriate tone. Students learn to use style sheets and<br />
current conventions in punctuation. Students will take<br />
their knowledge of human behavior, business<br />
environments, and business organization and apply it to<br />
effective written and oral business communication.<br />
Prerequisite: WR121 with a “C” or better.<br />
WR214T Professional/Technical Writing<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
Professional/Technical Writing will familiarize students<br />
with various strategies for accomplishing professional<br />
goals through communication. The course will stress the<br />
application of higher order thinking in persuasive and<br />
routine correspondence, memos, and reports by<br />
examining rhetorical strategies and the importance of<br />
appropriate style and conventions. Students will write at<br />
least 3,000 words to be evaluated by the instructor, in<br />
addition to other, non-evaluated assignments.<br />
Prerequisite: WR121 with a “C” or better.<br />
WR222 Advanced Composition<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This advanced course explores approaches to writing<br />
that are beyond the scope of traditional composition<br />
offerings. The emphasis is on sophisticated or<br />
experimental methods and abundant student writing.<br />
Prerequisite: WR122 with a “C” or better.<br />
WR227 Report Writing<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
Report Writing will study the principles of<br />
composition applied to the writing of reports required in<br />
the technical and business professions. It includes<br />
procedures for fact gathering, organization, graphic<br />
layout, and other methods of compiling data. Students<br />
will learn to quote, paraphrase, and summarize sources<br />
correctly and effectively, and to cite those sources and<br />
list them with the aid of a style sheet. Students will write<br />
reports in their chosen disciplines.<br />
Prerequisite: WR122, WR214 or WR214T with a<br />
“C” or better.<br />
