ANTH231 Native North Americans: Pacific Northwest<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Examines Native American cultures in the Pacific<br />

Northwest from prehistoric to modern times.<br />

Archaeological findings, historical accounts, and recent<br />

developments are discussed, including the origins and<br />

development of art forms and fishing technology.<br />

ANTH232 Native North Americans<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

A broad overview of the earliest inhabitants of North<br />

America, including the traditional lifestyles, languages,<br />

and customs of selected Indian cultures of several<br />

cultural areas. The origins of Native American culture,<br />

the cultural diversity at the time of early European<br />

contact, and Native American history from the 1600s to<br />

the present are emphasized.<br />

ART115 Basic Design<br />

3 credits (3 lec, 3 TBA lab hrs/wk)<br />

Introduces principles and concepts of shape, line,<br />

texture, design, structure, unity, and proportion in black<br />

and white. Employs exercises developed to motivate<br />

individual creativity and experimentation in a variety of<br />

media. Must be taken in sequence.<br />

ART116 Basic Design<br />

3 credits (3 lec, 3 TBA lab hrs/wk)<br />

Introduces more complex principles of design, color, and<br />

composition. Includes color properties, combination,<br />

relatedness, proportions, and interaction. Exercises are<br />

developed and enriched to stimulate individual creativity<br />

and experimentation in a variety of media. Also offered<br />

as ART116A, B, C in one-credit modules<br />

Prerequisite: ART115 with a “C” or better.<br />

ART117 Basic Design<br />

3 credits (3 lec, 3 TBA lab hrs/wk)<br />

Focus on principles and concepts of three-dimensional<br />

design, including mass, spaces, and texture. Class<br />

discussion and assignments are developed by<br />

investigation of unity, variety, and balance and the<br />

physical and psychological effects of those concepts.<br />

Greater experimentation and creativity is expected.<br />

Employs exercises developed to motivate individual<br />

creativity and experimentation in a variety of media.<br />

Prerequisite: ART116 with a “C” or better.<br />

ART131/132/133 Introduction to Drawing<br />

3 credits/term (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

A beginning course in drawing and sketching. Explores<br />

form and space on a two-dimensional surface.<br />

Stresses creative and analytical vision and composition.<br />

Innovative, right-brain exercises allow training in<br />

the basic drawing skills of observation, selection,<br />

representation, perception, and hand-eye-mind<br />

coordination. Emphasizes composition, the<br />

understanding of visual form, and skill mastery of<br />

complex form relationships in light and space. Also<br />

offered as ART131A, B, C in one-credit modules.<br />

ART181A,B,C Introduction to Painting A, B, C<br />

1 credit/term (1 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)<br />

These courses continue to explore visual<br />

representation on a two-dimensional surface. It uses oil<br />

or acrylic paints for space division, color, and surface<br />

treatment. Both lecture and studio activity are involved<br />

weekly.<br />

ART184A Watercolor Basics I<br />

1 credit/term (1 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Introduces principles and concepts of watercolor at a<br />

beginning level.<br />

ART184B Watercolor Basics II<br />

1 credit/term (1 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)<br />

A continuation of introductory principles and concepts of<br />

beginning watercolor. The study of color, composition,<br />

and value control are emphasized.<br />

Prerequisite: ART184A.<br />

ART184C Watercolor Basics III<br />

1 credit/term (1 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)<br />

A continuation of introductory principles and concepts<br />

of beginning watercolor. Special attention given to<br />

experimental techniques, and history, and use of egg<br />

as a binder.<br />

Prerequisite: ART184B.<br />

ART185A, B, C Watercolor Basics IV, V, VI<br />

1 credit/term (1 lec, 2 lab hrs/wk)<br />

A continuation of the active participation of each student<br />

in painting experience aimed at developing visually<br />

coordinated skills in watercolor. The study of color<br />

theory, color schemes, composition, and value control<br />

is emphasized.<br />

Prerequisite: ART184C.<br />

ART191 Beginning Sculpture<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Demonstrates techniques, processes, and materials in<br />

sculpture. Explores a variety of media and sculptural<br />

concepts, emphasizing the discipline and processing of<br />

handling the tools and additive materials of clay and wire,<br />

subtractive qualities of stone and clay.<br />

ART192 Beginning Sculpture<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Further develop aesthetic awareness and perceptions<br />

about three-dimensional form. Demonstrate techniques,<br />

processes, and materials in sculpture. Explore a variety<br />

of media and sculptural concepts, emphasizing safe and<br />

effective handling of tools and materials. Bronze casting<br />

introduced with wax process.<br />
