ACADEMIC SKILLS<br />

ABE0745 Adult Basic Education<br />

0 credits (variable hrs)<br />

A modified open-entry, open-exit course. <strong>Part</strong>icipants<br />

study the basic skills in written communication,<br />

mathematics, and reading comprehension. Emphasis<br />

will be placed on those skills necessary to pass the five<br />

General Education Development (GED) tests, to be<br />

successful in entry-level employment, or to be successful<br />

in college or other training. Learning may take place in<br />

small groups, with individualized instruction, or in<br />

computer assisted environments.<br />

ESL0747 English as a Second Language (ESL)<br />

0 credits (2-15 lec-lab hrs/wk)<br />

A course for students whose first language is other than<br />

English. The whole language approach to English will be<br />

taught, rather than instruction about the language.<br />

ESL0791 Citizenship<br />

0 credits (2 lec-lab hrs/wk)<br />

Surveys the history and form of government in the<br />

United States to assist the individual in the naturalization<br />

process. The course is supplemented by English for<br />

Foreign Born/ESL.<br />

ITP0583/0584/0585 Beginning, Intermediate,<br />

Advanced Sign Language (Signed English)<br />

2 credits/term (2 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Signed English skills of the manual alphabet, finger<br />

spelling, and more advanced signs so students can<br />

communicate receptively and expressively with the<br />

hearing impaired. Games, videotapes, guest signers,<br />

and amateur interpreting practice are included.<br />

RD0751/0752/0753 Reading Skills<br />

1-3 credits/term (1-3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Course provides a systematic approach for identifying<br />

and correcting reading difficulties and improving reading<br />

efficiency through lecture instruction. In addition, based<br />

on the results of standardized reading tests given at the<br />

beginning of the term, each student is given individually<br />

prescribed coursework to address areas needing<br />

strengthening. Students use multi-grade- level materials<br />

to improve their basic knowledge of vocabulary and<br />

spelling, in addition to materials designed to improve<br />

reading comprehension and efficiency. Student will<br />

participate in standardized follow-up evaluation at the<br />

end of the term, involving testing, conferencing, and<br />

advising. Because reading is a skill that involves both<br />

mental and physical activity, most students are advised<br />

and encouraged to continue their reading program by<br />

enrolling in Reading Skills RD0752 to gain further skills<br />

that will help them achieve reading fluency that<br />

enables them to interpret and understand the<br />

college-level reading they will encounter in their other<br />

academic subjects.<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate score on placement test.<br />

RD101/102/103 <strong>College</strong> Reading I,II,III<br />

1-3 credits/term (1-3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

<strong>College</strong> Reading presents a systematic approach for<br />

improving reading efficiency for those with a 12th grade<br />

and above reading level. Students learn an analytical<br />

method of reading non-fiction material, which can<br />

improve both speed and comprehension.<br />

Prerequisites: Appropriate score on placement test.<br />

ACCOUNTING/BOOKKEEPING<br />

AC2331/2332 Federal and State Income Tax I, II<br />

4 credits/term (4 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Students determine and report federal and state personal<br />

income taxes. Designed to assist established or potential<br />

income tax preparers. Approved by <strong>Oregon</strong> Department<br />

of Commerce for hours of instruction required to take<br />

preparers' and consultants' exam.<br />

AC2766 Accounting I<br />

4 credits (4 lec, 1 lab hr/wk)<br />

This course prepares a record-keeper for employment<br />

and gives the accounting student a basic understanding<br />

of the accounting field. It provides an introduction to the<br />

accounting cycle for a service enterprise and a retail firm<br />

for a single proprietorship. The course covers mass<br />

processing of transactions using special journals.<br />

AC2767 Accounting II<br />

4 credits (4 lec, 1 lab hr/wk)<br />

Accounting II continues the concepts of Accounting I and<br />

introduces trade accounts and notes, inventories, the<br />

treatment of long-term assets and depreciation, liabilities<br />

and investments, partnership accounting, and accounting<br />

for corporations.<br />

Prerequisite: AC2766 or equivalent with a “C” or better.<br />

AC2772 Intermediate Accounting I<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course offers a comprehensive study of accounting<br />

theory and concepts. Emphasis is on how these<br />

concepts apply to financial accounting. Attention will<br />

also be focused on use of accounting information for<br />

management purposes.<br />

Prerequisite: BA213 with a “C” or better.<br />
