G246 Geological Hazards and Natural Catastrophes<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

The causes and effects of earthquakes, tsunamis,<br />

landslides, ground subsidence and collapse,<br />

floods, storms, coastal erosion, and volcanic eruptions.<br />

The possibilities for prediction and mitigation will be<br />

examined, as will the potential for natural hazards<br />

in <strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />

HEALTH AND FIRST AID<br />

FN225 Nutrition<br />

4 credits (4 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course focuses on the study of basic nutrition<br />

principles and newer scientific investigations of optimal<br />

diet for health. A review of present-day nutrition problems<br />

is included. The course is valuable for home economic,<br />

nursing, physical education, food service, dental hygiene,<br />

and childhood education majors.<br />

HE9359 Responding to Emergencies<br />

1 credit (6 lec, 5 lab, 12 lec-lab hrs/total)<br />

Teaches the First Aid skills the citizen responder will<br />

need in order to act as first link in Emergency Medical<br />

Services (EMS) system. It will provide the citizen<br />

responder with the knowledge and skills necessary in<br />

an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and<br />

minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness<br />

until professional medical help arrives. The course<br />

content and activities will prepare participants to<br />

recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions<br />

for first aid care. The course includes emphasis on<br />

prevention of injuries and illness, with a focus on<br />

personal safety and CPR.<br />

HE9380 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation<br />

(AHA or Red Cross)<br />

0.5 credit (4 lec, 6 lab hrs/total)<br />

Developed to teach skills and background of application<br />

of CPR in cardiac arrests, clearing an airway<br />

obstruction of a choking victim, and recognizing the<br />

aforesaid situation. Red Cross and/or American Heart<br />

Association certification.<br />

HE9381 Standard First Aid<br />

0.5 credit (5 lec, 5 lab hrs/total)<br />

Designed to teach a good basic knowledge of First Aid<br />

for the immediate and temporary care of the sick<br />

and injured prior to the arrival of summoned medical<br />

treatment. This course meets the standard<br />

requirements of OSHA, yet exceeds with CPR<br />

(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).<br />

HE9424 Hospice Training<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course prepares adults to work with hospice clients<br />

(terminally ill persons and their families) as hospice<br />

volunteers. Attendees learn with history and principles of<br />

hospice care, common experiences of hospice clients as<br />

they move through the dying and bereavement<br />

processes, and skills needed to carry out the volunteer<br />

role. Although this course focuses primarily on<br />

interpersonal interventions and activities, personal and<br />

cultural reactions to death and dying are included. Also<br />

offered as HE9419 for approved volunteer training.<br />

HE198/298 Independent Study in Health<br />

1-3 credits (hrs to be arranged)<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor consent.<br />

HE112 Introduction to Allied Health Careers<br />

1 credit (2 TBA lab hrs/wk)<br />

This course is designed to expose students to a<br />

variety of allied health careers. Students will lean about<br />

educational, physical, and professional demands of the<br />

various careers from the perspective of the currently<br />

practicing professionals. This course is considered a<br />

supportive course.<br />

HE201 Exploring Death and Dying<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This class deals with death on a personal level.<br />

Historical, psychological, socio-cultural, epidemiological,<br />

and developmental aspects including current issues on<br />

death and dying are discussed by the class as a group<br />

and sharing personal experience is encouraged. Also<br />

offered as HE0575 for approved volunteer training.<br />

HE250 Personal Health<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

HE250 is a basic personal health class dealing with<br />

current health trends and issues in the United States.<br />

The course will include information on mental, emotional,<br />

and social health and behavior aspects. Physical health<br />

including nutrition, weight management, physical<br />

conditioning, environmental health, sexually transmitted<br />

disease, cancer and aging, drug education (including<br />

tobacco, alcohol, and psycho-active drugs), and<br />

cardiovascular disease will be reviewed.<br />
