ART255 Intermediate Ceramics<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Prepares students for self-directed artistic expression<br />

and creativity. Students demonstrate construction<br />

techniques and methods used to design, shape and<br />

form pottery through their personal practice and<br />

research. Includes wheel throwing, pottery decoration,<br />

glaze calculation, and firing. Skill and use of ceramic<br />

equipment are developed to a point of independence.<br />

Prerequisite: ART254.<br />

ART280 Field Experience<br />

1-3 credits/term (3-9 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Students can take up to nine credits maximum.<br />

Practical, on-site experience in art education, graphics or<br />

art-related areas under the joint supervision of an advisor<br />

and a sponsoring professional. (Museum and gallery<br />

experience, retail art supply experience, professional<br />

studio artist, art educator apprenticeship)<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor consent.<br />

ART281/282/283 Painting (Beginning)<br />

3 credits/term (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Offers visual observation and composition of selected<br />

subjects using oil or acrylic media. Second and third<br />

quarter continues technique and color control on a<br />

two-dimensional surface.<br />

ART284/285/286 Painting (Intermediate)<br />

3 credits/term (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Offers visual observation and composition of selected<br />

subjects using oil or acrylic media. Emphasis will be<br />

given to individual needs and interests in painting.<br />

Prerequisites: ART281/282/283.<br />

ART291 Sculpture<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Explores three-dimensional shapes and forms in greater<br />

depth and intensity from previous year. Students assess<br />

personal strengths and weaknesses to establish a plan<br />

for building skills. They become mentors to new sculpture<br />

students, thereby strengthening the critical eye.<br />

Prerequisites: ART191, 192 or 193 with a “C” or better.<br />

ART292 Sculpture<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 4 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Explores three-dimensional shapes and forms. Includes<br />

casting processes and materials. Continues mold<br />

making techniques with an emphasis on creativity and<br />

exploration of media.<br />

BI101/102/103 General Biology<br />

4 credits/term (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />

This three-term sequence course satisfies the science<br />

requirement for non-biological science, pre-professional<br />

students. Surveys biological principles applied to plants<br />

and animals, from cellular level to ecological level of<br />

organization. General Biology attempts to convey to the<br />

student an appreciation of the most important aspects of<br />

life on earth.<br />

BI140 Practical Ecology<br />

4 credits (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />

An introduction to the basic concepts of ecology, using<br />

examples from the ecology of the local area, with a<br />

consideration of impacts made by different types of<br />

land use, particularly involving urban landscaping.<br />

BI149 Introduction to Human Genetics<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Covers the basic concepts of genetics as they have<br />

developed since the nineteenth century. Discusses<br />

current techniques that are being developed and applied<br />

to problems of inheritance patterns, genetic disorders,<br />

and genetic therapy. Behavior and population genetics<br />

are included.<br />

Prerequisites: MTH70 and WR0525 with a “C” or better.<br />

BI198/298 Independent Study in Biology<br />

3 credits (hrs to be arranged)<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor consent.<br />

BI201/202/203 Introductory Biology<br />

4 credits/term (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />

For biological science majors in programs which will<br />

require students to complete a series in introductory<br />

biology. Comprehensive study of the life sciences,<br />

including analytical techniques used in order to perform<br />

proper inquiries.<br />

Prerequisite: High school chemistry or one<br />

college-level chemistry course within last five years.<br />

BI201 - Includes a review of inorganic, organic, and<br />

biochemistry as well as cellular biology and genetics.<br />

BI202 - Includes evolution, a survey of the diversity of<br />

organisms, and plant function.<br />

BI203 - Includes the anatomy, physiology, and<br />

behavior of the members of the animal kingdom (with<br />

emphasis on the vertebrates) and how all organisms<br />

interact (ecology).<br />
