Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />

Description: Students pursuing a career in early childhood elementary or<br />

secondary education have several career options. Opportunities are available in a<br />

variety of public and private educational and child care settings. The curriculum offers<br />

opportunities for career training as an educational assistant in preschool, elementary,<br />

or secondary school settings as well as preparation for teacher positions in preschool,<br />

day care, kindergarten, or Head Start settings. Career ladder opportunities to help<br />

students prepare for positions as licensed teachers are offered through the Para<br />

educator/Educational Assistant Certificate of Completion program, Associate of<br />

Science degree, with an emphasis in Childhood Education and Family Studies with<br />

articulation options to four-year colleges and universities.<br />

Employment Opportunities: Childhood Education and Family Studies<br />

opportunities range from fair to excellent with occupational titles that include Child<br />

Care Worker, Day Care Aide, Child Care Attendant, Preschool Teacher Aide,<br />

Preschool Teacher, Lead Teacher, Classroom Assistant, Classroom Assistant/Special<br />

Education, Instructional Assistant, Teacher Assistant, Teacher Aide, Teacher, Family<br />

Advocate, and Child Development Specialist.<br />

Studies Emphasis<br />

Notes:<br />

1. Course must be selected from Social Sciences listing on page 61. Students<br />

seeking teacher licensure are advised to choose a minimum of one course from<br />

100 and 200 level HST.<br />

2. ECE209, ECE102, and ED280 must be taken in sequence. A criminal history<br />

check is required prior to enrollment in ECE209.<br />

3. Developmental and remedial courses listed on page 60, and CS101 will not fulfill<br />

elective requirement.<br />

4. Eastern <strong>Oregon</strong> University requires WR227<br />

5. Course must be selected from Arts and Letters listing on page 61. Students<br />

planning to attend Eastern <strong>Oregon</strong> University should take one course from 100<br />

level PHL.<br />

The Associate of Science degree, with an emphasis in Childhood Education and<br />

Family Studies, leads to the Baccalaureate degree in Human Development or Early<br />

Childhood Education. Students may petition for adjustments in the <strong>Southwestern</strong><br />

Associate of Science degree if course requirements are met for the first two years of<br />

any regionally accredited four-year institution offering a degree in Education, Early<br />

Childhood Education, Family Studies, or Human Development. An advising agreement<br />

is in place with Eastern <strong>Oregon</strong> University for students working towards teacher<br />

certification and Eastern’s newest distance education degree of Liberal Studies with an<br />

Early Childhood Education emphasis.<br />

All coursework specific to Childhood Education and Family Studies degrees and<br />

certificates is offered online through <strong>Southwestern</strong>’s e-SOCC WebCT platform.<br />

Additional elective topics are offered as program enhancement through a partnership<br />

with Educatorcredits.com professional development for educators.<br />

6. Students may substitute MTH212, 213, 243. Students who plan to obtain a<br />

degree in Elementary Education through the <strong>Oregon</strong> University System should<br />

take Math 211, 212, 213. Students are encouraged to take any required math<br />

prerequisites during their first year.<br />

7. Sequence must be selected from Sciences listing on page 61. Students seeking<br />

teaching licensure are advised to take GS104,105 and either GS106 or GS108.<br />

8. Prerequisite of CS101 or equivalent.<br />

9. Specific electives: ECE240, FN225, HDFS222, HDFS285, HS154, HS167,<br />

MTH211, MTH212, MTH213.<br />

10. SP100, 111, 112, 217, 218, 219.<br />

• Students who have not completed two years of high school foreign language are<br />

encouraged to take approved language course.<br />

• Students who wish to complete the requirements for the One-Year Certificate of<br />

Completion in Childhood Education and Family Studies should take ECE240,<br />

FN225, and HS154.<br />

• Students seeking teaching licensure are advised to plan their academic program<br />

jointly with their <strong>Southwestern</strong> advisor and an advisor from the <strong>Southwestern</strong><br />

University Center to be best prepared for transfer requirements. With careful<br />

advising, this degree will meet requirements for both the AS and AA/OT degrees.<br />
