PHL103 Introduction to Logic and Critical<br />
Thinking<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course focuses on improving reasoning and<br />
critical assessment ability through the study of<br />
fundamental principles of formal logic, informal logic, and<br />
critical thinking. This course examines the history of<br />
logic, the laws of reasoning logically, and the methods<br />
of developing and analyzing extended formal<br />
argumentation. Attention is also paid to examining logic<br />
in a practical context through the study of illogical or<br />
absurdist centers of mass communication as found in<br />
propaganda, advertising, politics, the mass media, and<br />
mass entertainment.<br />
Prerequisite: WR121 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />
Students may use no more than 9 credits of Physical<br />
Activity (PE185) in meeting the total credit requirement<br />
for an Associate of Arts/<strong>Oregon</strong> Transfer or counted in<br />
the their GPA; see Physical Education requirements for<br />
each degree. Degrees offered include an Associate of<br />
Science Physical Education Emphasis and an Associate<br />
of Science Athletic Training Emphasis.<br />
PE0587 Introduction to Golf Caddying<br />
0 credits (6 lec, 11 lec-lab hrs/total)<br />
This course is designed to provide students with an<br />
understanding of the game of golf and the role of the golf<br />
caddy. Students will be able to practice caddying<br />
techniques before being employed. Students will become<br />
aware of the rules and regulations of golf, the etiquette of<br />
golf, and how customer service plays a role in the<br />
caddying experience.<br />
PE131 Introduction to Health and Physical Education<br />
(Athletic Training, Health Education, Physical<br />
Education, and Fitness Management)<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course is designed to offer an orientation for those<br />
students seeking a teaching career in athletic training,<br />
health education, physical education, and fitness<br />
management. Students will be introduced to basic<br />
philosophies and objectives, professional opportunities,<br />
qualifications, and certification requirements for their<br />
desired field of study. Students will learn how the<br />
various disciplines related to health and fitness interact<br />
and broaden their understanding of the profession.<br />
Students will develop their four-year plan, including<br />
courses that will be taken at <strong>Southwestern</strong> and those to<br />
be taken during their junior and senior years at the<br />
desired institution. This course will be taught fall and<br />
winter terms each year.<br />
PE185 Physical Education<br />
1 credit (Variable hours)<br />
Provides students with an activity that will promote<br />
physical and emotional well-being. Enables the student<br />
to develop and/or pursue lifelong physical activity.<br />
Class meets three hours a week. Some courses have<br />
prerequisites or require instructor consent. Special<br />
arrangements may be made for restricted or<br />

PE231 Wellness for Life<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
Students will learn about basic human anatomy,<br />
nutrition, and weight management concepts in this<br />
course. They will learn the importance of physical activity,<br />
good health habits, and how these behaviors will improve<br />
the quality of life as they age. Students will use physical<br />
assessment techniques to assess their present strength,<br />
flexibility, and cardiovascular health, and will receive<br />
informational tools needed to facilitate change in their<br />
present state of fitness. Current health issues and<br />
concepts will also be covered in this course.<br />
PE259 Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries I<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries I is an<br />
introductory course in athletic health care. It is the first<br />
course of a two-course sequence with the purpose of<br />
exposing students to myriad injuries and conditions that<br />
occur in athletics and physical activity. With a focus on<br />
the lower extremity, this class prepares students to<br />
recognize and identify an injury, evaluate it, and begin<br />
appropriate care for it. Preventive measures are a<br />
prominent component of the class, aimed at minimizing<br />
the number and severity of injuries resulting from<br />
participation in athletics or physical activity. This class is<br />
most relevant to those students pursuing careers in<br />
athletic training, allied health, coaching, education, and<br />
for those who personally enjoy physical activity.<br />
