PHAR5472 Pharmacology I<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This basic course introduces the student to generic and<br />
trade names of common therapeutic drugs. Drug<br />
categories and drug use in prevention of or interference<br />
with disease processes are discussed. Important<br />
contraindication, side effects, cautions, and interactions<br />
regarding drug use are included. The course also covers<br />
common nonprescription drugs.<br />
Prerequisites: OA2221 and RD101 with a “C” or better<br />
or COMPASS Reading score of 85 or higher.<br />
PHAR5473 Pharmacology II<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This basic course continues the student’s introduction to<br />
generic trade names of common therapeutic drugs. Drug<br />
categories and drug use in prevention of or interference<br />
with disease processes are discussed. Important<br />
contraindication, side effects, cautions, and interactions<br />
regarding drug use are included. The course also covers<br />
common nonprescription drugs.<br />
Prerequisites: PHAR5472, PHAR5474 and PHAR5475<br />
with a “C” or better.<br />
PHAR5474 Pharmacy Calculations<br />
2 credits (2 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course reviews basic mathematics and includes the<br />
application of math concepts in the performance of<br />
certain Pharmacy Technician duties (and other<br />
health-care provider duties). It covers systems of weight,<br />
measure, and temperature and the conversion from one<br />
system to another. The basics of retail accounting are<br />
introduced. Students develop the capabilities needed to<br />
calculate dosages, drug amount or volume, percent<br />
concentrations, milli-equivalents, and intravenous<br />
infusion rates.<br />
Prerequisite: MTH70 with a “C” or better, or COMPASS<br />
Algebra score of 26-70.<br />
PHAR5475 Pharmacy Technician Procedures I:<br />
Retail Chain and Independent<br />
4 credits (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />
This course is designed to provide students with the<br />
knowledge and skills needed in the performance of<br />
technical pharmacy tasks. These include ambulatory,<br />
prescription processing, compounding and prepacking,<br />
communications, and computer operations.<br />
Prerequisite: PHAR5470 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHAR5476 Pharmacy Technician Procedures II:<br />
Institutional Hospital and Extended Care<br />
4 credits (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />
This course is designed to provide students with<br />
the knowledge and skills needed in the performance of<br />
technical pharmacy tasks. These include hospital<br />
dispensing systems, compounding and prepacking,<br />
communications, computer operations, aseptic technique,<br />
IV prep admixtures, and oncology preparations.<br />
Prerequisites: PHAR5470, PHAR5472, PHAR5474, and<br />
PHAR5475 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHAR5477 Pharmacy Records Management<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills<br />
in preparing, maintaining, and storing a multiple of<br />
pharmacy records. The student will have practice typing<br />
a variety of instructional and retail prescription labels,<br />
and be capable of producing at a predetermined,<br />
satisfactory rate.<br />
Prerequisites: PHAR5470, PHAR5472, PHAR5474, and<br />
PHAR5475 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHAR5478 Pharmacy Technician Practicum<br />
3 credits (9 lab hrs/wk)<br />
Pharmacy experience in retail and/or institutional<br />
pharmacy practice. Instruction and supervision<br />
provided by staff or participating agencies. Concurrent<br />
classroom activities are included.<br />
Prerequisites: PHAR5470, PHAR5472, PHAR5474, and<br />
PHAR5475 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHILOSOPHY<br />
PHL101 Introduction to Philosophy:<br />
Philosophical Problems<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course is an introduction to the fundamental<br />
concepts, problems, questions, and systems of<br />
philosophy. In particular, this course investigates<br />
philosophical principles as they relate to epistemology<br />
(how we know what we know); metaphysics (the nature<br />
of reality); mind/body dualism, the problem of other<br />
minds, language and meaning; freedom and<br />
determinism, the existence or nonexistence of God;<br />
and meaning and purpose in life. This course will also<br />
introduce multicultural and feminist perspectives on these<br />
philosophical problems.<br />
Prerequisite: WR121 with a “C” or better.<br />
PHL102 Ethics<br />
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />
This course critically examines the idea of human<br />
beings as moral agents. More specifically, this class<br />
investigates the nature of moral philosophy from a<br />
theoretical and applied perspective. <strong>Part</strong>icular attention is<br />
paid to the history of moral philosophy; the various<br />
schools of moral philosophy; applied ethics, including<br />
business, environmental, medical, and sexual ethics; and<br />
how to develop a more sophisticated, personal, moral<br />
philosophy.<br />
