PSY239 Introduction to Abnormal Psychology<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course discusses the diagnosis, etiology, and<br />

therapy of emotional disturbances and behavioral<br />

disorders.<br />

PSY240 Introduction to Psychopharmacology<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course is a basic introduction to the principles of<br />

drug action on the mind and body. The course will focus<br />

on drug metabolism, the nervous system, and neuron<br />

physiology. The course will include some of the<br />

psychopharmacological research findings on alcohol,<br />

psychotherapeutic drugs, SSRIs, stimulants, marijuana,<br />

opiates, caffeine, nicotine, and hallucinogens.<br />

PSY243 Drugs and Behavior<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course is a basic introduction to the principles of<br />

drug action on the mind and body and the relationship<br />

of substance abuse to crime and criminal justice<br />

administration. Drug metabolism and<br />

psychopharmacological research findings on legal and<br />

illicit drugs are addressed including drug effects, theories<br />

of abuse, legislation, enforcement strategies, policy<br />

options and treatment, and prevention strategies.<br />

Treatment issues and prevention models are related to<br />

diverse cultures, lifestyles, gender, age, and the needs of<br />

people with disabilities.<br />

SOC145/ANTH145 Special Topics in Sociology<br />

1-3 credits (variable hrs)<br />

A field study of significant sociological and/or<br />

anthropological features of a selected region. Students<br />

will apply techniques of inquiry and analysis from various<br />

academic disciplines in order to understand and resolve<br />

key issues at selected field study sites. Introductory<br />

lecture will survey key issues and introduce techniques<br />

required for a site-based field study, followed by on-site<br />

visit. The three credit course does not have the separate<br />

lecture component that is a preview and summary<br />

experience that is included in the ten-day trip. Also<br />

offered as SOC0250/ANTH0250 for no credit or grade.<br />

Concurrent: Any Anthropology or Sociology course.<br />

SOC198/298 Independent Studies in Sociology<br />

1-3 credits (hrs to be arranged)<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor consent.<br />

SOC204 General Sociology<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Focuses on sociology as a science; examines<br />

concepts related to human social structure, culture,<br />

socialization, status and role, gender roles, social<br />

groups, organizations, social stratification, race and<br />

ethnic relations.<br />

SOC205 General Sociology<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Applies sociological perspectives to the study of recent<br />

social changes, trends in social institutions of the<br />

family, religion, education, economics, politics, medical<br />

sociology, plus selected topics.<br />

SOC206 General Sociology<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Discusses identification and analysis of social<br />

problems. Explores addictions, crime and delinquency,<br />

group discrimination, inequality, poverty, alienation,<br />

domestic and international violence, environment and<br />

energy from sociological perspectives, focusing on<br />

feasible solutions.<br />

SOC210 Marriage and the Family<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Examines intimate relationships, courtship, marriage<br />

and family patterns - old, new, and unconventional.<br />

The course focuses on how relationships are built,<br />

maintained, changed, and how people cope with love,<br />

sexuality, children, conflict, divorce, blended families,<br />

disabilities, and death of family members.<br />

SOC213 Racial and Ethnic Relations<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

An historical perspective on contemporary problems<br />

in American society as related to minority and<br />

majority populations.<br />

SOC220/CJ131 Institutional Corrections<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

A detailed exposure to correctional facilities used for the<br />

punishment of those convicted of crimes. The evolution<br />

of the penal institution, levels of custodial security, and<br />

issues relating to custodial, treatment, and programs<br />

within penal institutions will be explored. Field trips to<br />

correctional facilities.<br />
