OA5401 Body Structure and Functions I<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course is an introduction to human anatomy and<br />

physiology. It is designed for medical office students,<br />

pharmacy technicians and other students who desire a<br />

broad review of body systems. Normal structure and<br />

functions of the human body systems, characteristics of<br />

the cell as the basis of life and organization of tissues<br />

and organs will be covered.<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

OA5533 Medical Law and Ethics<br />

2 credits (2 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Medical Law and Ethics is a survey of the manner<br />

in which the law and codes of ethics affect the<br />

practice of health occupations paraprofessionals.<br />

An introduction to the concepts of litigation, consent,<br />

introduction to law, ethics and bioethics, genetic<br />

engineering, sterilization, abortion, and death and dying.<br />

OA116 Office Procedures<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

Office Procedures presents the methods, concepts<br />

and procedures for business office operations. This<br />

includes career planning, understanding the office<br />

environment, and how to organize an efficient work<br />

place. It also includes information on the office<br />

technology, communications, an overview of records<br />

management, meetings, travel, and career advancement.<br />

Prerequisite: CS101 with a “C” or better.<br />

OA121 Keyboarding I<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Presents principles of touch method typing. Typing speed<br />

and accuracy are developed through drills and practice<br />

using the touch method of typing. Students are<br />

introduced to basic production work in the form of<br />

business and personal letters, tables, manuscripts, and<br />

memos. This course is considered a supportive course.<br />

OA124 Keyboard Skillbuilding<br />

3 credits (2 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)<br />

Development of speed and accuracy utilizing a<br />

diagnostic approach to individual skill assessment and<br />

prescribed drill work.<br />

Prerequisite: OA121 with a “C” or better.<br />

OA220 Electronic Calculators<br />

1 credit (2 lec-lab hrs/wk)<br />

The student will learn the ten-key system for machine<br />

operation and use of electronic, desk-top style<br />

calculators in the four fundamentals of mathematics.<br />

Four operations are used to solve applied business<br />

problems with speed and accuracy.<br />

Prerequisite: MTH20.<br />

OA240 Filing/Records Management<br />

3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)<br />

This course provides a comprehensive study of filing<br />

systems, equipment, and criteria by which records are<br />

created, classified, stored, and retrieved according to the<br />

rules established by the Association of Records<br />

Managers and Administrators (ARMA).<br />

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN<br />

Note: Students must successfully complete all courses<br />

(attain a grade of “C” or better) in a quarter of the<br />

Pharmacy Technician curriculum before advancing to the<br />

next quarter.<br />

PHAR5470 Introduction to Pharmacy Law:<br />

Practice and Law<br />

4 credits (3 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)<br />

This course introduces students to the career of<br />

Pharmacy Technician, explores history and personnel<br />

related to pharmaceutical services, and includes<br />

standards of pharmacy ethics. A variety of practice<br />

environments and technician roles are identified. An<br />

introduction to federal and state laws regulating<br />

pharmacy practice and the roles of professional<br />

associations and regulatory agencies is provided.<br />

A general overview of the knowledge base required for<br />

the occupation and introduction to standard pharmacy<br />

references prepare the student for the remainder of<br />

courses in the Pharmacy Technician certificate program.<br />

Prerequisite: COMPASS Reading score of 85 or higher.<br />
