Associate of General Studies (AGS)<br />

Degree Requirements<br />

The Associate of General Studies (AGS) degree is intended to give individual<br />

students flexibility in using a variety of college-level courses (generally 100-level or<br />

above), academic or collegiate-level professional technical courses to meet the<br />

college-level associate degree requirements.<br />

Program notes<br />

Complete a minimum of 90 credit hours with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of<br />

2.0 (“C”) average or better. Complete 30 of the last 45 credits at <strong>Southwestern</strong> before<br />

the AGS degree is awarded.<br />

Arts and Letters (9)<br />

Two courses, six credits minimum, from List A AND one course, three credits minimum,<br />

from List A or B.<br />

Social Sciences (9)<br />

Two courses, six credits minimum, from List A AND one course, three credits minimum,<br />

from List A or B.<br />

Mathematics/Science/Computer Science/Engineering (12)<br />

Two courses, eight credits minimum, from List A AND one course, four credits minimum,<br />

from List A or B.<br />

The AGS is tailored to the student’s needs and interests while maintaining high<br />

general education standards. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution<br />

within <strong>Oregon</strong> should complete the AA/OT degree, which is articulated statewide<br />

(30 of the last 45 credits must be completed at <strong>Southwestern</strong>).<br />

Electives (Remaining credits to total minimum of 90)<br />

Combination of lower division transfer and/or professional technical education courses not to<br />

include remedial, developmental, four-digit courses that begin with a zero, courses with<br />

prefixes CE/CEU/PDU, and no more than nine credits of PE185.<br />

In addition to the above noted requirements, it is expected that the following general<br />

education or related training skills and concepts will be integrated into major coursework:<br />

• Computer Literacy<br />

• Critical Thinking<br />

• Environmental Awareness<br />

• Library/Research Skills<br />

• Major applications in Writing and computation<br />

• Professional Ethics<br />

Supportive Courses:<br />

The college has determined that the following supportive courses may be necessary to assist<br />

students to successfully complete their programs: CS125W, HD100, HD112, HD140,<br />

HD204, HD208, HE112, LIB127, OA121, RD101, RD102, RD103.<br />

The maximum number of credits allowable for basic, developmental, or supportive courses<br />

under federal financial aid guidelines is 45.<br />
