Inclusive Communities = Stronger Communities<br />
GLOBAL REPORT ON ARTICLE 19: THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND BE INCLUDED IN THE COMMUNITY<br />
supports and services to be more inclusive and<br />
community oriented.<br />
‰ Sharing stories – We asked people with intellectual<br />
disabilities and families to share their personal stories<br />
with us. Through the submission of stories, both<br />
written and oral, poems, pictures and videos, people<br />
showed us and told us about their lives.<br />
‰ Regional Forums – II hosted five (5) Regional<br />
Capacity Building Forums – Americas, Bogotá,<br />
Colombia, November 2010; Africa, Johannesburg,<br />
South Africa, March 2011; Europe, Peniche, Portugal,<br />
October 2011; Asia Pacific, Kathmandu, Nepal,<br />
November 2011; MENA, Amman, Jordan, March 2011<br />
– and three (3) strategic regional meetings – Mexico<br />
City, Mexico, February 2012; Nairobi, Kenya, March<br />
2012; Brussels, Belgium, May 2012.<br />
Specific tools and resources were developed to assist our<br />
members and partners to participate in the process.<br />
Presentations on both the Campaign and on Article 19<br />
were made available online in English and translated into<br />
Arabic, Japanese, French and Spanish to be regionally and<br />
locally relevant 3 .<br />
Regional capacity building forums, regional strategy<br />
meetings and focus groups provided an opportunity to<br />
hear from families and people with intellectual disabilities<br />
about issues that were specific to each region of the world.<br />
The process of having people meet and share their<br />
experiences provided both important input for the report<br />
and opportunities for people to develop strategies to build<br />
inclusive communities.<br />
In Bolivia we heard, “ This initiative helps to illustrate many<br />
of the protests led by families and civil society<br />
organizations over the years, in order to acknowledge and<br />
gain the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, in<br />
this case, the right to live in community. When trying to<br />
