GLOBAL REPORT ON ARTICLE 19: THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND BE INCLUDED IN THE COMMUNITY
67
Supports
19(b) “Persons with disabilities have access to a
range of in-home, residential and other
community support services, including personal
assistance necessary to support living and
inclusion in the community, and to prevent
isolation or segregation from the community;”
The vast majority of people with intellectual disabilities
around the world live at home with their families and the
vast majority of those people who live at home do not
receive the supports they need to live “independently” in
the community, nor do their families receive the support
they need to enable their family member to be included.
While there is little reliable national census data to show
