Parents’ organizations can play a pivotal role and<br />
should be reinforced so that children with disabilities<br />
are valued, cherished and supported by<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir families and communities.<br />
<strong>State</strong>s parties to <strong>the</strong> CRPD and <strong>the</strong> United<br />
Nations and its agencies have committed <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
to conducting awareness-raising campaigns<br />
to change attitudes towards children<br />
with disabilities and <strong>the</strong>ir families. Among o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
things, this will involve highlighting <strong>the</strong>ir abilities<br />
and capacities, and promoting community<br />
engagement with and by children with disabilities.<br />
<strong>State</strong>s parties are also required to provide<br />
information to families on how to avoid, recognize<br />
and report instances <strong>of</strong> exploitation, violence<br />
and abuse.<br />
Discrimination on <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong> disability is<br />
a form <strong>of</strong> oppression. The establishment <strong>of</strong><br />
a clear, legal entitlement to protection from<br />
Convention on <strong>the</strong> Rights <strong>of</strong> Persons with Disabilities and<br />
