Prose Level 3 Scale range: 276 to 325<br />

Tasks <strong>in</strong> this level tend to require readers to make literal or<br />

synonymous matches between the text and <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation given <strong>in</strong> the<br />

task, or to make matches that require low-level <strong>in</strong>ferences. Other tasks<br />

ask readers to <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation from dense or lengthy text that<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s no organizational aids such as head<strong>in</strong>gs. Readers may also<br />

be asked to generate a response based on <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that can be<br />

easily identified <strong>in</strong> the text. Distract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is present, but is<br />

not located near the correct <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

Average difficulty value of tasks <strong>in</strong> this level: 298<br />

Percentage of adults per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this level: 32%<br />

One of the easier Level 3 tasks requires the reader to write a brief letter<br />

expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that an error has been made on a credit card bill. This task is at 280<br />

on the prose scale. Other tasks <strong>in</strong> this level require the reader to search fairly<br />

dense text <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation. Some of the tasks ask respondents to make a literal<br />

or synonymous match on more than a s<strong>in</strong>gle feature, while other tasks ask them<br />

to <strong>in</strong>tegrate multiple pieces of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation from a long passage that does not<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> organizational aids.<br />

One of the more difficult Level 3 tasks (with a difficulty value of 316)<br />

requires the reader to read a magaz<strong>in</strong>e article about an Asian-<strong>America</strong>n woman<br />

and to provide two facts that support an <strong>in</strong>ference made from the text. The<br />

question directs the reader to identify what Ida Chen did to help resolve<br />

conflicts due to discrim<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
