average document and quantitative per<strong>for</strong>mance between those who choose to<br />

read the sports pages and those who do not. While on the quantitative scale the<br />

proficiency gap is 8 po<strong>in</strong>ts, on the document scale it is only 3 po<strong>in</strong>ts. On the<br />

prose scale, the 2-po<strong>in</strong>t difference between sports page readers and nonreaders<br />

is not statistically significant. Once aga<strong>in</strong>, these results can be better<br />

understood by reexam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the differences across the literacy levels <strong>in</strong> the<br />

percentages of newspaper readers who reported choos<strong>in</strong>g the sports pages,<br />

particularly <strong>for</strong> the quantitative scale. In this dimension of literacy, readers <strong>in</strong><br />

the lowest level (45 percent) were considerably less likely than those <strong>in</strong> the<br />

highest level (58 percent) to say they generally read this section. On the other<br />

hand, there were relatively small differences (of 5 to 6 po<strong>in</strong>ts) across the prose<br />
