Each prose selection was accompanied by one or more questions or<br />

directives which asked the reader to per<strong>for</strong>m specific tasks. These tasks<br />

represent three major aspects of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation-process<strong>in</strong>g: locat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and generat<strong>in</strong>g. Locat<strong>in</strong>g tasks require the reader to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation <strong>in</strong> the<br />

text based on conditions or features specified <strong>in</strong> the question or directive. The<br />

match may be literal or synonymous, or the reader may need to make a textbased<br />

<strong>in</strong>ference <strong>in</strong> order to per<strong>for</strong>m the task successfully. Integrat<strong>in</strong>g tasks ask<br />

the reader to compare or contrast two or more pieces of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation from the<br />

text. In some cases the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation can be found <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle paragraph, while <strong>in</strong><br />

others it appears <strong>in</strong> different paragraphs or sections. In the generat<strong>in</strong>g tasks,<br />

readers must produce a written response by mak<strong>in</strong>g text-based <strong>in</strong>ferences or<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g on their own background knowledge.<br />

In all, the prose literacy scale <strong>in</strong>cludes 41 tasks with difficulty values<br />

rang<strong>in</strong>g from 149 to 468. It is important to remember that the locat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g tasks extend over a range of difficulty as a result of<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractions with other variables <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• the number of categories or features of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that the reader must<br />

process<br />

• the number of categories or features of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation <strong>in</strong> the text that can<br />

distract the reader, or that may seem plausible but are <strong>in</strong>correct<br />

• the degree to which <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation given <strong>in</strong> the question is obviously related to<br />

the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the text<br />

• the length and density of the text<br />

The five levels of prose literacy are def<strong>in</strong>ed, and sample tasks provided, <strong>in</strong><br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g pages.<br />

Prose Level 1 Scale range: 0 to 225<br />

Most of the tasks <strong>in</strong> this level require the reader to read relatively<br />

short text to locate a s<strong>in</strong>gle piece of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation which is identical to<br />

or synonymous with the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation given <strong>in</strong> the question or<br />

directive. If plausible but <strong>in</strong>correct <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is present <strong>in</strong> the text,<br />

it tends not to be located near the correct <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation.<br />
