252 With Love to Muhammad sa the Khātam-un-Nabiyyīn
ِ ٰ
اِلاَّ‏ اذلَّ‏ ‏ِيْنَ‏ اتَ‏ بُوْا وَاَصْ‏ لَحُوْا وَاعْتَصَ‏ مُوْا ابِ‏ ٰ هللّ‏ ِ وَاَخْلَصُ‏ وْا دِيْنهَ‏ ‏ُمْ‏ هللِ‏ ّ
ِٕ فَاُولٰ‏ ٓ ى كَ‏ مَعَ‏ الْمُؤْمِنِينْ‏ َ وَسَ‏ وْفَ‏ يُؤْتِ‏ ٰ اهللّ‏ ُ الْمُؤْمِنِينْ‏ َ اَجْرًا عَ‏ ‏ِظيْمًا‎۝‎
Except those who repent and amend and hold fast to
Allāh and are sincere in their obedience to Allāh.
These are among the believers. And Allāh will soon
bestow a great reward upon the believers. 244
In the above verse, ma‘a can only mean “among,” not “with.”
Similarly, it is stated in the Holy Qur’ān:
رَّبَّنَاۤ‏ اِنَّنَا سمَ‏ ‏ِعْنَا مُنَادِايً‏ يُّنَادِىْ‏ لِلاْ‏ ‏ِيْمَانِ‏ اَنْ‏ اٰمِنُوْا بِرَبّ‏ ‏ِكمُ‏ ْ فَاٰمَنَّا ۖ رَبَّنَا
فَاغْفِرْ‏ لَنَا ذُنُوْبَنَا وَكَفّ‏ ‏ِرْ‏ عَنَّا س ‏ِاٰتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ‏ الاْ‏ ‏َبْرَا ‏ِر
۝ۚ
“Our Lord, we have heard a Crier calling us unto
faith, ‘Believe ye in your Lord,’ and we have
believed. Our Lord, forgive us, therefore, our errors
and remove from us our evils, and grant us death
among the righteous.” 245
The other meaning of ma‘a is “with”. For instance, Allāh, the
Exalted, says:
۝
َ يّ‏
وَاتَّقُوْا اهللّ‏ ٰ َ وَاعْلَمُوْٓا اَنَّ‏ اهللّ‏ ٰ َ مَعَ‏ الْمُتَّقِينْ‏ َ
And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is with those
who fear Him. 246
