Evangelical Lutheran Synod<br />
The Evangelical Lutheran Synod had its beginning<br />
among the Norwegian settlers who brought<br />
with them their Lutheran heritage. The synod was<br />
organized in 1853. It was reorganized in 1918 by<br />
those who desired to adhere to the synod’s principles<br />
not only in word but also in deed.<br />
The synod owns <strong>and</strong> operates Bethany<br />
Lutheran College <strong>and</strong> Bethany Lutheran<br />
Theological Seminary. It has congregations in 20<br />
states <strong>and</strong> maintains foreign missions in Peru,<br />
Chile, India, Korea, the Czech Republic, Latvia,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Ukraine. It operates a seminary in Lima, Peru<br />
<strong>and</strong> in Ternopil, Ukraine.<br />

Evangelical Methodist Church<br />
The Evangelical Methodist Church was organized<br />
in 1946 at Memphis, Tenn., largely as a<br />
movement <strong>of</strong> people who opposed modern liberalism<br />
<strong>and</strong> wished for a return to the historic Wesleyan<br />
position. In 1960, it merged with the Evangel<br />
Church (formerly Evangelistic Tabernacles) <strong>and</strong><br />
with the People’s Methodist Church in 1962.<br />
