HINDUISM
Hinduism is a western term for Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law), the various streams of practice,
ancient texts, and theological traditions associated with the Indian subcontinent. Hindus worship
Brahman (Ultimate Reality) which is both the formless Absolute and the divine-as-personal. Hindus fall
into schools of devotion to particular forms of the ultimate-as-personal: Vaishnavites (devotees of
Vishnu, known also through his avatars [manifestations] such as Rama and Krishna), Shaivites (devotees
of Shiva), and devotees of the Parashakti, the Divine Feminine (embodied variously as Durga,
Parvati, Kali, and more). Other deities may be regarded as subordinate to, or as personifications of various
functions of, the ultimate-as-personal. In the U.S.A., an ecumenical Hindu theology which sees all
deities as pointers to the one Brahman, and emphasizes the non-duality of all things is also prevalent.
