600 members include those who work in communications<br />

<strong>and</strong> related fields for churchrelated<br />

institutions, denominational agencies,<br />

non-<strong>and</strong> interdenominational organizations<br />

<strong>and</strong> communications firms who primarily<br />

serve religious organizations.<br />

Members represent a wide range <strong>of</strong> faiths,<br />

including Presbyterian, Baptist, United<br />

Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Mennonite,<br />

Roman Catholic, Seventh-day Adventist, Jewish,<br />

Salvation Army, Brethren, Bahá‘í, Disciples,<br />

Muslim, Latter-Day Saints <strong>and</strong> others.<br />

On the national level, RCC sponsors an<br />

annual three-day convention, <strong>and</strong> has published<br />

seven editions <strong>of</strong> a Religious Public Relations<br />

H<strong>and</strong>book for churches <strong>and</strong> church organizations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> a videostrip, The Church at<br />

Jackrabbit Junction. Members receive a quarterly<br />

newsletter (Counselor). There are 13<br />

regional chapters.<br />

RCC administers the annual Wilbur Awards<br />

competition to recognize high quality coverage<br />

<strong>of</strong> religious values <strong>and</strong> issues in the public<br />

media. Wilbur winners include producers,<br />

reporters, editors <strong>and</strong> broadcasters nationwide.<br />

To recognize communications excellence<br />

within church communities, RCC also sponsors<br />

the annual DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards for its<br />

own members.<br />

In 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, <strong>and</strong> in planning<br />

Communications Congress bringing together<br />

thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> persons from western, eastern <strong>and</strong><br />

third-world nations who are involved in communicating<br />

Religion News Service<br />

Religion News Service (RNS) has provided<br />

news <strong>and</strong> information to the media for 75 years.<br />

Owned by Advance Publications, it is staffed by<br />

veteran jounalists who cover stories on all <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world religions as well as trends in ethics, morality<br />

<strong>and</strong> spirituality.<br />

RNS provides a daily news service, a<br />

weekly news service, a web service <strong>and</strong> photo<br />

<strong>and</strong> service. The daily service is also available<br />

via the AP Data Features wire, or e-mail. The<br />

weekly report is available by wire or e-mail.<br />

RNS’s Photos Service features stock images<br />

<strong>and</strong> news photography. RNS also <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

Religion Press Release Services, which distributes<br />

press releases <strong>and</strong> advisories to religion<br />

editors. RNS is syndicated in the United<br />

Scholarships in Religion to journalists in the US<br />
