II DIRECTORIES 1. United States Cooperative Organizations, National The organizations listed in this section are cooperative religious organizations that are national in scope. Regional cooperative organizations in the United States are listed in Directory 6, “United States Regional and Local Ecumenical Bodies.” The Alban Institute, Inc. Wind, Ph.D. American Bible Society In 1816, pastors and laymen representing a variety of Christian denominations gathered in New York City to establish an organization “to disseminate the Gospel of Christ throughout the habitable world.” Since that time the American Bible Society (ABS) has continued to provide God’s Word, without doctrinal note or comment, wherever it is needed and in the language and format the reader can most easily use and understand. The American Bible Society is the servant of the denominations and local churches. The American Bible Society is committed to promoting personal engagement with the Holy Scriptures with the goal of changed lives. A special emphasis is placed upon advocacy for the Bible cause, partnerships with like-minded churches and para-church organizations, and with provision of Scripture. Today the ABS serves more than 100 denominations and agencies, and its board of trustees is composed of distinguished laity and clergy drawn from these Christian groups. The American Bible Society played a leading role in the founding of the United Bible Societies, a federation of 140 national Bible Societies around the world that enables global cooperation in Scripture translation, publication and distribution in more than 200 countries and territories. The Bible Society contributes generously to the support provided by the United Bible Societies to those national Bible Societies which request support to meet the total Scripture needs of people in their countries. Founded in 1941, The American Council of Christian Churches (ACCC) is a multi-denominational agency for fellowship and cooperation among Bible-believing churches in various denominations- fellowships, Bible Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Methodist Church, 20 Fellowship of Fundamental Bible Churches (formerly Bible Protestant), Free Presbyterian Church of North America, Fundamental Methodist Church, Independent Baptist Fellowship of North America, Independent Churches Affiliated, along with hundreds of independent churches. The total membership nears 2 million.
