In July 1879, the first issue of Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence (now called The Watchtower which is published in 175 languages with a circulation of 37,252,000 appeared. In 1884 Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society was incorporated, later changed to Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Congregations spread into other states and countries, and followers witnessed from house to house. By 1913, printed sermons were in four languages in 3,000 newspapers in the United States, Canada and Europe. Hundreds of millions of books, booklets and tracts were distributed. Publication of the magazine now known as Awake! Began in 1919. Today, it is published in more than 80 languages and has a circulation of upwards of 36,725,000). In 1931 the name Jehovah’s Witnesses, based on Isaiah 43 vs.10-12, was adopted. During the 1930s and 1940s, and as recently as 2002, Jehovah’s Witnesses fought many court cases in the interest of preserving freedom of speech, press, assembly and worship. They have won a total of 50 cases before the United States Supreme Court. A missionary training school was established in 1943, and it has been a major factor in the international expansion of the Witnesses. There are now 7.1 million Witnesses in 236 lands. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in one almighty God, Jehovah, who is the Creator of all things. They believe in Jesus Christ as God’s Son, the first of His creations. While Jesus is now an immortal spirit in heaven, ruling as King of God’s Kingdom, he is still subject to his heavenly Father, Jehovah God. Christ’s human life was sacrificed as a ransom to open up for obedient mankind the opportunity of eternal life. With Christ in heaven, 144,000 individuals chosen from among mankind will rule in righteousness over an unnumbered great crowd who will survive the destruction of wickedness and receive salvation into an earth cleansed of evil. Periodicals Ubique The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS), which was founded in 1847, has nearly 6,200 congregations in the United States and has active work or mission relationships in 88 countries. It has 2.4 million members and is the secondlargest Lutheran denomination in North America. The LCMS is a mission-oriented, Bible-based, confessional Christian denomination. It accepts the teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the Protestant Reformation of the Christian church in the 16th century. The Synod’s beliefs can be summed up in three phrases: Grace alone, Scripture alone, Faith alone. The church has more than 9,000 rostered pastors and some 11,500 additional rostered (called) church workers. Women are active in church work, although they do not occupy clergy positions. Serving in positions such as teachers, deaconesses, and social workers, women comprise approximately half of total rostered workers. The members’ responsibility for congregational leadership is a distinctive characteristic of the LCMS. Power is vested in voters’ assemblies, generally comprised of adults of voting age. Synod decision making is given to the delegates at triennial national and district conventions, where the franchise is equally divided between lay and pastoral representatives. LCMS educational institutions serve all ages from pre-school to college. LCMS congregations operates one of the largest Protestant elementary and secondary school system in the nation and some 26,500 students are enrolled in the LCMS’ 10 colleges and universities and two seminaries. The LCMS is known for mass-media outreach through “The Lutheran Hour,” broadcast around the world by Lutheran Hour Ministries; syndicated and streaming programming on KFUO radio; “This Is The Life” dramas on television; and the products of Concordia Publishing House, the third-largest Protestant, church-owned publisher, whose Arch Books children’s series alone has sold more than 60 million copies. The LCMS works with 300 Recognized Service Organizations (RSOs) to extend its social ministry. The LCMS is also a founding partner of Lutheran Services in America, a social service organization that serves one in every 50 Americans.
