Director of Research: Dr. David A. Roozen
The Hartford Institute for Religion Research of Hartford Seminary was established in 1981,
formalizing a research program initiated by the Seminary in 1974. Until recently it was known
as The Center for Social and Religious Research. The Institute’s work is guided by a disciplined
understanding of the interrelationship between (a) the inner life and resources of
American religious institutions and (b) the possibilities and limits placed on those institutions by
the social and cultural context into which God has called them.
Its twenty-one year record of rigorous, policy-relevant research, anticipation of emerging
issues, commitment to the creative dissemination of learning, and strong connections to both theological
education and the church has earned the Institute an international reputation as an important
bridge between the scholarly community and the practice of ministry.
