ZOROASTRIANISM
The western name for “The Good Religion” based on the teachings of the Prophet Zarathustra, who
lived sometime between 1200 and 550 B.C.E., in what is now Iran. Zoroastrians from India are often
called Parsis (Parsees). Zoroastrians worship Ahura Mazda (Wise Lord): the one God, the uncreated,
immanent and transcendent source of all that is good, true, and beautiful, for whom the only appropriate
symbol is fire. Zoroastrians fall into two streams: traditionalists, for whom all ancient
Zoroastrian texts are scripture; and progressives, for whom only the Gathas (the oldest texts) have
authority. The two streams differ sharply in beliefs and practices. There are also informal denominations
according to which of several Zoroastrian calendars one prefers.
