This church was founded by the Rev. John<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er Dowie on Feb. 22, 1896 at Chicago,<br />

Ill. In 1901 the church founded the city <strong>of</strong> Zion,<br />

IL <strong>and</strong> moved their headquarters there.<br />

Theologically, the church is rooted in evangelical<br />

orthodoxy. The Scriptures are accepted as the<br />

rule <strong>of</strong> faith <strong>and</strong> practice. Other doctrines call for<br />

belief in the necessity <strong>of</strong> repentance for sin <strong>and</strong><br />

personal trust in Christ for salvation.<br />

The Christ Community Church is a denominational<br />

member <strong>of</strong> The National Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Evangelicals. It has work in six other nations in<br />

addition to the United States. Branch ministries<br />

are found in Tonalea, Arizona.<br />

Christadelphians<br />

The Christadelphians are a body <strong>of</strong> people who<br />

believe the Bible to be the divinely inspired word<br />

<strong>of</strong> God, written by “Holy men who spoke as they<br />

were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:21).<br />

They believe that the Old Testament presents<br />

God’s plan to establish His Kingdom on earth in<br />

accord with the promises He made to Abraham<br />

<strong>and</strong> David; <strong>and</strong> that the New Testament declares<br />

how that plan works out in Jesus Christ, who died<br />

a sacrificial death to redeem sinners. They believe<br />

in the personal return <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ as King, to<br />

establish “all that God spoke by the mouth <strong>of</strong> his<br />

holy prophets from <strong>of</strong> old” (Acts 3:21). They<br />

believe that at Christ’s return many <strong>of</strong> the dead will<br />

be raised by the power <strong>of</strong> God to be judged. Those<br />

whom God deems worthy will be welcomed into<br />

eternal life in the Kingdom on earth. Christadelphians<br />

believe in the mortality <strong>of</strong> man; in spiritual<br />

rebirth requiring belief <strong>and</strong> immersion in the name<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jesus; <strong>and</strong> in a godly walk in this life. They have<br />

no ordained clergy, <strong>and</strong> are organized in a loose<br />

worldwide confederation <strong>of</strong> autonomous congregations<br />

(ecclesias) in approximately 100 countries.<br />

They are conscientiously opposed to participation<br />

in war. They endeavor to be enthusiastic in work,<br />

loyal in marriage, generous in giving, dedicated in<br />

preaching, <strong>and</strong> cheerful in living.<br />

The denomination was organized in 1844 by Dr.<br />

John Thomas, who came to the United States from<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> who devoted his life to a search for<br />

the truth <strong>of</strong> God from the Bible. Dr. Thomas<br />

claimed no special revelation or position. Although<br />

his Bible scholarship is highly respected, he is not<br />

revered as a prophet in any way. The name Christadelphian<br />

(“Brethren in Christ”) was adopted in<br />

1864. Initially limited mostly to English-speaking<br />

countries, the denomination now exists worldwide.<br />

Primary activities in North America include<br />

Sunday worship <strong>and</strong> Sunday Schools, midweek<br />

Bible classes, Bible Schools, <strong>and</strong> inter-ecclesial<br />

gatherings. In addition, the Williamsburg<br />

Christadelphian Foundation (WCF) sponsors <strong>and</strong><br />

assists charitable <strong>and</strong> preaching activities in<br />

many parts <strong>of</strong> the world, both by itself <strong>and</strong> in<br />

conjunction with the outreach work <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Christadelphian Bible Missions.<br />

(In North America, there are two Christadelphian<br />

groups, Central <strong>and</strong> Unamended.)<br />
