US RELIGIOUS BODIES
Religious Bodies in the United States
Arranged by Families
The following list of religious bodies appearing in the Directory Section of the Yearbook shows the
“families,” or related clusters into which American religious bodies can be grouped. For example, there
are many communions that can be grouped under the heading “Baptist” for historical and theological
reasons. It should not be assumed, however, that all denominations under one family heading are necessarily
consistent in belief or practice. The family clusters tend to represent historical factors more
often than theological or practical ones. These family categories provide one of the major pitfalls when
compiling church statistics because there is often a tendency to combine the statistics by “families” for
analytical and comparative purposes. Such combined totals are deeply flawed, even though they are
often used as variables for sociological analysis. The arrangement by families offered here is intended
only as a general guide for conceptual organization when viewing the broad sweep of American religious
culture.
Religious bodies that cannot be categorized under family headings appear alphabetically and are not
indented in the following list.
