US RELIGIOUS BODIES
of unity by a return to the Julian Calendar and traditional
ecclesiastical polity by the State Church.
About 1.5 million Orthodox Greeks belong to the
Old Calendar Church.
The first Old Calendarist communities in the
United States were formed in the 1930s. The
Exarchate under Metropolitan Cyprian was established
in 1986. Placing emphasis on clergy education,
youth programs, and recognition of the Old
Calendarist minority in American Orthodoxy, the
Exarchate has encouraged the establishment of
monastic communities and missions. Cordial contacts
with the New Calendarist and other Orthodox
communities are encouraged. A center for theological
training and Patristic studies has been established
at the Exarchate headquarters in Etna,
California.
In July 1994, the True Orthodox Church of
Greece (Synod of Metropolitan Cyprian), the True
Orthodox Church of Romania, the True Orthodox
Church of Bulgaria, and the Russian Orthodox
Church Abroad entered into liturgical union, forming
a coalition of traditionalist Orthodox bodies
several million strong.
Orthodox Tradition
Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the
U.S.A.*
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA
has its origin in the ancient lands of Rus-Ukraine
(present day Ukraine). It was to the inhabitants of
these lands that the Apostle Andrew first
preached the Gospel. Christianization began
early in the history of Rus-Ukraine by missionaries
from the Orthodox Christian See of
Constantinople. In 988 AD, the Saintly Prince
Volodymyr, crowned a process of Christian
Evangelization begun in the 4th century, by personally
accepting Orthodox Christianity and
inspiring his subjects to do the same. The baptism
of Volodymyr, his household and the inhabitants
of Kyiv, altered the face of Kyivan Rus-
Ukraine and Slavic history for all time. Kyiv
became the spiritual heart of Orthodox Christians
in Rus-Ukraine. It was from this See that missionaries
were sent into every corner of St.
Volodymyr’s realm. Through their efforts the
160
Gospel was preached and new communities were
established. The Mother Church of Kyiv and its
See of Saint Sophia, modeled after
Constantinople’s See of the same name, gave
birth to many Orthodox Christian centers and
communities in the west, east and north of the
Dnipro river, among them the Orthodox
Christian See of Moscow, Russia (Rosia).
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of USA ministers
to the needs of the faithful whose ancestral
roots are in Ukraine. The Church found haven in
America in the early 1920’s. Its first bishop,
Metropolitan Ioan (John) Teodorovych, arrived
from Ukraine in 1924 and shepherded the
Church as Metropolitan until his death in 1971.
His successor, Archbishop Mstyslav, arrived in
the USA in 1950, and shepherded the Church as
Metropolitan from 1971 until his death in 1993.
It was Metropolitan Mstyslav who, as a consequence
of Ukraine’s independence, was named
Patriarch of Kyiv and All Ukraine, in 1990.
Previous to 1996 there were two Ukrainian
Orthodox jurisdictions in the USA. Formal unification
of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the
USA, shepherded by His Beatitude Metropolitan
Constantine, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
of America, shepherded by His Grace Bishop
Vsevolod, was concluded in November 1996.
