12. Church Archives and Historical
Records Collections
American and Canadian history is interwoven with the social and cultural experience of religious
life and thought. Most repositories of primary research materials in North America will include some
documentation on religion and church communities. This directory is not intended to replace standard
bibliographic guides to those resources. The intent is to give a new researcher entry to major archival
holdings of religious collections and to programs of national scope. In the interest of space, no attempt
has been made to list the specific contents of the archives or to include the numerous specialized
research libraries of North America. The repositories listed herein are able to re-direct inquirers to significant
regional and local church archives, and specialized collections such as those of religious
orders, educational and charitable organizations, and personal papers.
Repositories marked with an asterisk (*) are designated by their denomination as the official
archives. The reference departments at these archives will assist researchers in locating primary material
of geographic or subject focus.
