The religion traces its roots back to Europe where in 1569, the Transylvanian king, John Sigismund (1540-1571), issued an edict of religious freedom. The religious philosophy led to the organization of the Universalists in this country in 1793, and the Unitarians (organized here in 1825). Beliefs: Founders of Universalism believed in universal salvation of all humans by God, while founders of Unitrarianism believed in the unity of God (as opposed to the Trinity). Unitarian Universalism is a liberal, creedless religion with Judeo-Christian roots. It draws also from Eastern, humanist, and other religious traditions, and encourages its members to seek religious truth out of their own reflection and experience. The denomination teaches tolerance and respect for other religious viewpoints and affirms the worth and dignity of every person. Organization and Government: The Unitarian Universalist Association consists of 1,046 congre- 161 US RELIGIOUS BODIES
US RELIGIOUS BODIES gations in the United States and Canada, with over 220,000 members, and is served by more than 1,700 ministers. The Association is the fastestgrowing liberal religion in North America, at an average annual rate of between 1 and 2 percent. Each member congregation within the UUA is governed independently. In North America, the Association is made up of 19 Districts (served by a District Executive who is a member of the UUA staff), with each congregation having district affiliation. The Association is governed by an elected Board of Trustees, chaired by an elected Moderator. An elected President, three vice presidents, and directors of five departments form the Executive Staff that administers the daily activities of the Association. The General Assembly, held each June in a different UUA District, serves as the Association’s annual business meeting. The UUA includes Departments of Ministry and Professional Leadership; Lifespan Faith Development; Congregational Services; Identity Based Ministries; District Services; Advocacy and Witness; Financial Development; and Communications. “UU World”, published quarterly, is the denominational journal. History: In 1996, a group of Independent Catholic Bishops, meeting in Synod, asked then Bishop, Robert M. Bowman to draw up guidelines for “inclusivity.” Under these guidelines a fellowship of independent Catholic churches and clergy was born under the leadership of now Archbishop Robert M. Bowman. This fellowship was incorporated in the State of Florida as a notfor-profit corporation in August of 1996 for the purposes of educatiing and ordaining clergy, organizing dioceses, parishes and ministries, conducting religious services, entering into various affiliations with other Christian churches, and educating the public on religious, moral and social issues. There were some ministers and laymen in the United Brethren in Christ Church who disagreed with the position and practice of the church on infant baptism, voluntary bearing of arms and belonging to oath-bound secret combinations. This group developed into United Christian Church, organized at a conference held in Campbelltown, Pennsylvania, on May 9, 1877. The principal founders of the denomination were George Hoffman, John Stamn and Thomas Lesher. Before they were organized, they were called Hoffmanites. The United Christian Church has district conferences, a yearly general conference, a general board of trustees, a mission board, a board of directors of the United Christian Church Home, a camp meeting board, a young peoples’ board and local organized congregations. It believes in the Holy Trinity and the inspired Holy Scriptures with the doctrines they teach. The church practices the ordinances of Baptism, Holy Communion and Foot Washing.
