example, during the 72 Hours Project at the turn<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Millennium, over a million people in 40<br />

countries participated in 200 projects for peace.<br />

Highlights included a 12-day interfaith pilgrimage<br />

across Pakistan <strong>and</strong> the celebration <strong>of</strong> 1 million<br />

signature on a petition to ban h<strong>and</strong>guns in<br />

Rio de Janeiro.<br />

United States Conference for the<br />

World Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Churches</strong><br />

The United States Conference <strong>of</strong> the World<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Churches</strong> was formed in 1938 when<br />

the WCC itself was still in the “Process <strong>of</strong><br />

Formation.” Henry Smith Leiper, an <strong>American</strong><br />

with many national <strong>and</strong> international connections,<br />

was given the title <strong>of</strong> “Associate General<br />

Secretary” <strong>of</strong> the WCC <strong>and</strong> asked to carry out<br />

WCC work in the U.S. After the World Council<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Churches</strong> was <strong>of</strong>ficially born in 1948 in<br />

Amsterdam, Netherl<strong>and</strong>s, Leiper raised millions<br />

<strong>of</strong> dollars for WCC programs.<br />

Today the U.S. Conference <strong>of</strong> the WCC is<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> representatives <strong>of</strong> U.S. member<br />

churches <strong>of</strong> the worldwide body. The U.S.<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> the WCC works to develop relationships<br />

among the churches, advance the work <strong>of</strong><br />

WCC <strong>and</strong> interpret the council in the United<br />

States.<br />

Foundation<br />

The Vellore Christian Medical College<br />

Foundation supports the wide range <strong>of</strong> programs<br />

at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore,<br />

Tamil Nadu, India, by securing contributions for<br />

its major capital equipment <strong>and</strong> construction<br />

goals; grants for program educational, research<br />

<strong>and</strong> health care programs; <strong>and</strong> funds to support<br />

scholarships for medical nursing <strong>and</strong> allied health<br />

students at Vellore <strong>and</strong> senior faculty study outside<br />

<strong>of</strong> India. The Board also facilitates opportunities<br />

for North <strong>American</strong>s to volunteer at CMC <strong>and</strong> fosters<br />

working relationships between CMC <strong>and</strong><br />

institutions in the U.S. Print, DVD <strong>and</strong> electronic<br />

materials about MC’s 100+ years as a leading<br />

medical college <strong>and</strong> hospital are available as part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Board’s public education program. A capital<br />

campaign to raise one million dollars toward a<br />

new campus is now underway.
