Pillar of Fire
The Pillar of Fire was founded by Alma Bridwell
White in Denver on Dec. 29, 1901 as the
Pentecostal Union. In 1917, the name was changed
to Pillar of Fire. Alma White was born in Kentucky
in 1862 and taught school in Montana where she
met her husband, Kent White, a Methodist minister,
who was a University student in Denver.
Because of Alma White’s evangelistic endeavors,
she was frowned upon by her superiors, which
eventually necessitated her withdrawing from
Methodist Church supervision. She was ordained
as Bishop and her work spread to many states, to
England, and since her death to Liberia, West
Africa, Malawi, East Africa, Yugoslavia, Spain,
India and the Philippines.
The Pillar of Fire organization has a college and
two seminaries stressing Biblical studies. It operates
eight separate schools for young people. The
church continues to keep in mind the founder’s
goals and purposes.
