Christian Brethren (also known as
Plymouth Brethren)
The Christian Brethren are a loose grouping of
autonomous local churches, often called “assemblies.”
They are firmly committed to the inerrancy
of Scripture and to the evangelical doctrine of
salvation by faith alone apart from works or
sacrament. Characteristics are a weekly Breaking
of Bread and freedom of ministry without a
requirement of ordination. For their history, see
“Religious Bodies in the United States” in the
Directories section of this Yearbook.
